Yea, that's right. The "Norwegian Wood" of Murakami (not The Beatles)
I think I will be seeing this movie, soon.
I'm mostly interested in the camera work here.
Because it's impossible for the film to follow the style of the book.

edit: Uh... I just watched the trailer four times.
*edit: Wtf why is no one else excited about this? Isn't this book on everyone's favorite list? It freakin' has to be. IT'S NORWEGIAN WOOD GOD DAMNIT. THE MOVIE HAS >7.0 SCORE ON IMDB. THE TRAILER IS QUITE APPEALING AS WELL.

If that trailer doesn't turn you on, I don't know what will. "Sen kyu roku ju kyu nen no natsu." You can hear the melancholy in Toru's voice following the haunting piece playing on the guitar.

That movie honestly looks freakin awesome! I would love to go and see that.

I heard it got decent reviews, but I'm kind of afraid to see for myself.

I wonder when I'll have a chance to see this in theaters. I have to see it in a theater first. It makes every movie more enjoyable.

Gonna see it tomorrow. I can tell you afterwards if you should be afraid or not.

[i]Edit:[/i] I Just watched it. The movie seemed a bit incoherrent at first. The scenes were shown after each other quite rapidly.
So I sat there and thought, it this it? . If the movie keeps on going at this pace, it will be finished in less than an hour.
But then, when Wanabe met Midori things were going more smoothly and calmly.

Seen as a whole the movie followed the book quite correctly. The most important scenes, dialogues and even parts of the letters were shown. The movie didn't enhance the book though. At times, I had the feeling it was lacking on some parts.
I had the feeling, Murakami's presence was missing in the movie. Let me explain this more clearly with a metaphor. It would be like watching a baseball match you've already seen before, but this time the sound is turned off and there isn't a commentator.

For me the best potrayed characters were: Midori, Nagasawa (Manabe's later friend) and Reiko. [quote]Oh God, Norwegian Wood. Remember the chapter with the 13 and 30 year old?[/quote] yeah, that 30 year old woman. You won't see that scene though. You will see too little of her.

[b]In short:[/b] you won't miss much if you will not see the movie. The "Norwegian Wood" at the end of the movie, was quite special though. (oh, and there are some intense sex scenes. So if you have a poor imagination, or just wanna have a boner. . .)

That scene could've made the movie. WHY WOULD THEY CUT THAT? SUCH A TRAVESTY.

Ooh. I wanna see.

I read the book long enough ago that I don't remember it all that well but that's okay, I'd probably enjoy the movie more this way.

I know this is probably a stupid thing to complain about, but the haircuts look like they're straight out of 2010, not the late sixties. Especially Toru and Naoko. I can kind of understand the reasoning behind this - it makes the characters seem more contemporary to young viewers - but it's a glaring anachronism.

I read almost all Murakami's books after each other, so the story lines and characters are getting a bit intertwined. However, upon seeing the film. You will instantly remember the passages of the book. Most talking are direct quotations from the book. Also, without having read the book you probably have a hard time understanding all the freestanding scenes. Here and there you will fill it with your knowledge of the book.

While watching I thought, 'was the book that much a romance'? But you won't be like "...*sigh* so cliche, not this again, man get over it, find another woman!"
The acting on the most critical parts, in which the strongest emotions should have been shown, wasn't really convincing to me. It didn't touch me like in the book. Well, one particular scene with Toru gave me some goosebumps as well as when the ending song "Norwegian Wood" kicks in. However, it can't capture the melancholy that Murakami has created in the book. Like said before, it misses Murakami's concise descriptions. I found the music at times distracting. (including music from Johnny Greenwood from "Radiohead") Instead of intensifying the scenes, it just distracted you from it. Sometimes it was a bit overdone and seemed out of place.

Yeah, especially when their clothes (most noticable Toru's) look like they [i]are[/i] from the 60's. All in all I didn't really had the feeling that it was playing in the 60's. Actually, when I saw one Japanese hippie at the record shop in which Toru worked, it seemed he was awkwardly out of place.

I want to see a young girl seduce a grown woman, and I want it to be graphic. Damn it.

Are you sure the haircuts aren't historically accurate? I mean, I guess I don't know what typical Japanese hair styles out of the 60s looked like.

Just trust me on this; I am a haircut expert. I am not exactly sure what haircut was most popular in Japan in the 60s, but Toru's 'do in this movie is straight outta 2010 Japan.
