After listening though, I thought this world was the biggest disappointment from Sawao ever. :/ I actually enjoyed the two previous minis. But this world was... D:

Same here. The first two releases are cool. The second being my favorite.
But This World... pure rubbish.

Re: Best of 2010
Live Drive and Bakuon Drop were the only two songs I found at all enjoyable from The Predators. It's like the pillows without Manabe- a fuck load of power chords.

Re: Best of 2010
I was able to find almost all of Show Your Fangs enjoyable. I can't stand Wild Tiger... but everyone else makes the cut.
I agree about the power chords. I can deal with them... but I won't take them seriously.

Hey now, some of the pillows' best songs are written in power chords.

Hm. They certainly have some great power chord songs! But I don't think any of my favorites are like that. Power Chords can be fun, and they are necessary for some good ole rockin... but I tend to go for stuff that has more to it.
Besides, most of the time you've got Sawao chugging along with power chords anyways... regardless of what Manabe is doing (which more often than not is also power chords these days. lol).

A power chord is often preferable to a full or open chord under heavy distortion, as redundant notes may create a more dissonant sound - which may be exactly what you're looking for, but it is a common misconception to assume that more notes = more substance. In terms of dissonance, as you may know, octaves are perfectly consonant, followed closely by perfect fourths and fifths, but anything beyond that, such as major or minor thirds, introduce dissonance: hence, power chords, as well as octave chords for that matter (although technically, power chords and octave chords aren't chords). Under distortion, instead of the clean sound of a power chord, you get an indistinguishable washy mess - which, like I said, may be exactly what you are looking for (and the pillows use this a lot - probably more than power chords), but it doesn't really add any substance, and may even detract from it.
Eddie Van Halen is a guitarist known for his extreme distortion, which is why you'll rarely see him holding out more than three notes at a time.

Re: Best of 2010
Blah blah. Acoustics 101.
Regardless of what we're talking about here, we all know that the pillows haven't been the same band their entire career. I'm not sure why you exploded in this giant dialogue on power chords, or why you assumed I meant "more means more substance". Power chords are simply a root a fifth and then the root again. Harmonically, that is simple no matter how you look at it. I tend not to enjoy straight power chords, though - just like every other type of chord - they have their place.
Even with the presence of distortion I've been impressed by what Manabe's been able to do in terms of lead guitar playing throughout the pillows' career... and there was a time when they played with a much cleaner tone, which allowed for far more elaborate musicianship on Manabe's part. I tend to enjoy that era the most. The earlier years.
But I won't lie and say some of that sloppy sounding mess and the power chords aren't in some of my favorite pillows songs either. I just tend to enjoy the older stuff. I enjoyed the interesting harmonies.
Hey now, some of the pillows' best songs are written in power chords.
Agreed. Carnival and Wake Up, Frenzy! are two awesome power chord songs off the top of my head, but they are also much better than anything by The Predators. And lets get real; 90% of Ajikan's songs are freakin' octave power chords.

Re: Best of 2010
Eh? Carnival dosen't use many power chords, except in the pre-chorus. Unless you mean Sawao's part, in which case that might as well be true for every song.

Uh, because you said:
Power Chords can be fun ... but I tend to go for stuff that has more to it.
Unless you were quite literally referring to the discrete number of notes in a given chord, hence saying that you "tend to go for stuff (i.e., chords) that ha[ve] more (notes) to [them]," which you may very well have, then the only reasonable meaning of this sentence would be: "Power chords are insufficient to provide the level of substance in musical works that I tend to enjoy."
Furthermore, I wouldn't quite call a quick summary of consonance and dissonance an "explosion of dialogue," but you sound somewhat defensive to say the least, and I'm quite perplexed as to why.

When I said "more to it" I meant more than just power chords. A song can have a lot of power chords in it (like Carnival or Wake up, Frenzy), but like I said, I there to be more to it than that. Usually Manabe plays power chords or maybe octave chords at some point in a lot of the pillows' music, but he often spices it up with cool lead lines or riffs. I wasn't referring to just power chords themselves, but rather, their application to the composition of entire song. I was pretty vague, so my apologies if that wasn't clear to you.
Power chords live off of distortion, and that's fine... but after years of listening to rock, I will never get over the fact that it's just a P5. Gets boring.

Huh. I didn't know I sounded defensive on the internet. My bad. Better work on that. My post was simply about the fact that I tend to enjoy more varied use of chords than straight up power chords in songs. I suppose I was a little annoyed to see a paragraph related to the basics of what makes it all work attached my response (since that is something that's common knowledge to me).

Re: Best of 2010
So you're saying that you prefer a songs that do not exclusively feature power chords? I may have misunderstood because the pillows don't really have any such songs, a la "Blitzkrieg Bop," and I don't think that anyone was suggesting they did. In the context of the pillows, when discussing power chords, I think we're really discussing whether Sawao is playing full or open chords ("Little Busters" verse), power chords ("Ladybird Girl" verse), or something else ("Hybrid Rainbow" verse) as part of the rhythm section.
