I meant that in a more stylistic than literal sense.

I remember pretty clearly when I first heard it, after it came out... Man, where did the time go?

Post Re: The Pillows Covers on YouTube
Putting this up out of boredom. I'm planning to do a Walkin' On The Spiral cover so this is a practice attempt. There are some parts I haven't looked at yet so I just kinda winged it.(like in the solo)

Also, if anyone who's done covers has some advice to offer on recording software/balancing audio levels i'd greatly appretiate it. For some reason the software i'm using is refusing to recognize my microphone, so i've been having to use the piss-poor onboard mic and its really starting to get on my nerves.

I think you've got a sour chord in your intro riff.

Yea, Mare pointed that out to me. I might not have noticed which is why I like to get IM's advice. :shred:

What I could really use is some reccomendations about balancing the Guitar vs. the song track. Do I want to try and equalize them to the same volume, or have the guitar drowning out the song? Is it better to place the amp behind me with the camera facing me, or put the amp next to the camera and have it infront of me?

This is all fairly new territory for me so some advice on what makes a good cover would be appretiated. I've got a good mic if I can get it to work, but my Amp also has Line Out. Should I try recording audio directly and mixing it in?

Don't worry about making it perfect with all that extra stuff. Ultimately, a good cover is one that has few mistake, decent recording, and possibly some creative interpretation.

You may be able to get better sound if you use the line out... depending on how you hook up to the computer (apparently a preamp is helpful for boosting the signal) and possibly depending on your sound card. I guess you'd just have to try it with what you have and see. When I took a sound recording class, we did not mike the amps - however, we were recording guitars and bass at the same time, so it was necessary in order to have clean, separated tracks.

But from my limited knowledge, one method isn't necessarily better than the other. It just depends on what kind of sound you want and the limitations of the equipment you have available.

I did guitar/drum cover of Walkin' a few years ago, never got around to the bass or vox:

The only thing I remember about the recording was that I put a flanger effect on the lead using a plug-in in Cooledit and was surprised it sounded decent considering it was done in post.

Ok, here's my second take at Spiral. I listened to the song through some headphones and picked up on strumming patterns I was overlooking, and some other mistakes, I think it's alot 'tighter' now. Barring anything I missed I just need to work on the Solo.

As always, thanks to anyone who takes the time to watch it. I inherently think anything I play is good so I need harsh outside opinions. :shred:

still got that bum chord, bro. it's a straight up major chord, I think.

also on the trademark riff after "walking on the spilal!" you should be striking each note, without using hammer-ons. Each part of that riff is strummed.

Prechorus, the double-stop riff, between the big chord strums. One of those notes is right, the other one seems. off. IIRC you had it right in the first take, but not on this one. I'd have to check.

yeah, the solo...

End of the prechrous, when you have octave chord stuff. It ascends, then goes low, then ascends again - then we have the two chords when Sawao sings "mou ichido" at 2:33. The rhythm/strum-pattern on those chords is off.

same problem with the main riff and hammer ons.

Good ending!
hey, you wanted criticism, right?

I don't understand the nature of the line out, but even with a relatively expensive interface, I have been disappointed by the results. I had assumed that it would reflect the best sound, but obviously there is something missing.
