Post Interesting Intervals and other composition notes
I don't know where this belongs really, but anyway....

Recently I've been trying to analyze the pillows musically, as there have always been, what I think, are some very unique distinctions in their music that I don't hear anywhere else, be it chord voicings or intervals...most often the way Sawao's vocal melody intertwines to the chordal harmony.
Here's my list of song's I'm looking at, though there are tons more (I'm trying to keep it fairly recent....not so much recent, but not jazz-age pillows. My whole reasoning behind the endeavor is to learn more about composition and utilize it in my own writing, which is a rockish feel.)
No Surrender
Last Holiday
No Self Control
Crazy Sunshine
New Years Eve
Walking on a Spiral
Another Morning
Like a Lovesong

Anyway, I was posting so that A: you could give me other songs that you like in this vain, or comment on the ones I've chose, and B: I can report my findings for anyone interested, if that's anyone. Perhaps I'm the only theory geek.

Boat House, Curly Rudy, Tashika Me Ni Ikou, Good Morning Good News, She Is Perfect.

I can't really say much, as I'm only just starting to really grasp some of the concepts regarding musical composition, but I'm learning. On that note, this does interest me, and I would be interested in hearing what you have to say.

Let Mare tell you about Manabe's love for double-octave chords.

Those octave intervals? Manabe loves them. And they're awesome.

Hey, MyFoot, you mind sharing these "unique" findings you uncovered in the songs you listed? Sounds interesting... but I'm wondering what you're noticed.

It's a legit work in progress. I just started today figuring out No Surrender....in that one I particularly like the progression in the chorus and the way the vocals intertwine with them.

Yeah, but WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT, written in theory, would be very useful, and WHY it's interesting/unique. Otherwise, this thread sucks.

Yeah, we need details here. Which keys, why unique, why should a non-pillows fan be impressed with Sawao? Technical, specific details please.

Don't quite get what you don't understand about me not having any answers yet. I'M WORKING ON IT...all I have right now are songs I really like because they contain certain aspects that are very unique in that I hear these melodic phrases that are in numerous songs by the pillows that I love.

Well, it's just that he made some pretty interesting statements that we'd like to see supported. I want to see someone explain to me exactly *why* the pillows sound unique. What, precisely, is unique about Sawao's composition? It's not enough to say "the vocals are interwoven with the chorus progression in an interesting way."

Yeah, and I'm sure there are grounds for a pretty interesting discussion here. I think it'd help to hear the opinion of pillows fans and general rock fans on these topics (songwriting, chord progression) regarding Sawao's songs. What do you think, MyFoot? How do you intend to develop this analysis?

Looking forward to seeing what you'll come up with!
