Although, if Wikipedia is to believed, it's just another term for chiptune music, which is what I know it as.
Yeah, I think sheer is being a little indirect here. It's all chiptune music - people who make key generators often put chiptune music in their key gen applications. I contribute: YMCK http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4GoHgR73D4If you can get past the cuteness, you'll find some really solid Jazz composition here. Wait for the solo at 0:48!

Only if you compare a general query search to a specific phrase search. Not if you compare like parameters. http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?la ... n+music%22Then again, I could probably manipulate the searches to show whatever I wanted to, really - not that it shows anything in the first place...but even if it did.

Re: Artist you're currently listening to.
"Keygen music" >>> "chiptune music."
I think this is a little flawed: "chiptune" stands on its own as referring to a style of music. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChiptuneIt's precise, in a way that "pop" or "rock" is not precisely about music. Saying "chiptune music" is sort of like saying "I like punk rock rock music." On the other hand "keygen music" necessitates "music" being attached to it. "keygen" itself has nothing to do with music. Google band names who play this style of music. YMCK, Anamanaguchi, Sabrepulse, all of them are associated with the terms "8-bit" or "chiptune." Hell, call the genre "video game music" if you want. But referring to the genre as "keygen music" is hella obscure, and its use is probably limited to the group of people who actually know what the hell key generators are, and that some people actually put music into their key generators. Here's an analogy: Calling that style of music "keygen music" instead of "chiptune" is like calling this ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yM4Tb9mkqTo) "geisha music" instead of "shamisen music." Sure geishas have traditionally played shamisens. But the instrument is a frickin shamisen, and its use is much broader.

Nujabes, Asobi Seksu, Utada, toe, Zazen Boys, and Radiohead. And the pillows, but that's usually all the time.
Analysis of facetious remark.
Er...my point wasn't that my comparison was optimal - my point was that no matter how you phrase it, the comparison would be flawed, even if we assumed that the entire concept of comparing Google results were valid, or that the web site even does it to any degree of accuracy. I mean, do we also count "key generator music" or "crack music" or "crack keygen music" or what?
But referring to the genre as "keygen music" is hella obscure, and its use is probably limited to the group of people who actually know what the hell key generators are, and that some people actually put music into their key generators.
Exactly. "The internet" - which when referring to a group of people doesn't typically refer to every user on the internet, but rather a core group of users who are intimately familiar with the internet and internet culture. People who know what the Pirate Bay and Slashdot are; the successors to the usenet generation - hell, the people who still use usenet (all three of them). I mean, "keygen music" is somewhat obscure, in the grand scheme of things, but I would have expected a person who regularly visits reddit and posts on an internet forum, let alone the webmaster of that forum who has a computer science degree from a top university, to have been in on the joke. As far as the "official" genre name as decreed by Wikipedia, I never contested that we're talking about "chiptune music" - or that you would ever call it "keygen music" outside of the boundaries of the internet.

Huh.

Re: Artist you're currently listening to.
...I'm not really sure how my initial comment could not be construed as a facetious joke. I mean, I'm not going to defend it and say it was laugh out loud funny, and that you're all humorless for not getting it - it was just one of those offhand quips. I mean, come on - I even started talking about the Rescue Rangers. Obviously, much of the humor is lost now that we're delving deep into a serious analysis of what was said, which I didn't initially realize (hence my remark about Chip).
I mean, I only have to direct you to this site to prove that chiptune music is popularly known as "keygen music" on "the internet."

Honestly, one of my first thoughts was to wonder whether people generated abstract electronic music using serial keys. Consider me more enlightened now.
Yes, I like YMCK.

Mt. St. Helen's Vietnam Band They're cool and will probably appeal to all you hipster indie kids. Anchors Dropped: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKyDQRb1hwoThis is my favorite song from their first of two albums, and it's also the only studio recording I could find of any of their songs on YouTube. Edit: apparently this is a family band. also the drummer is 15.
