"chiptune" stands on its own as referring to a style of music. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiptune
It's precise, in a way that "pop" or "rock" is not precisely about music. Saying "chiptune music" is sort of like saying "I like punk rock rock music." On the other hand "keygen music" [i]necessitates[/i] "music" being attached to it. "keygen" itself has nothing to do with music.

Google band names who play this style of music. YMCK, Anamanaguchi, Sabrepulse, all of them are associated with the terms "8-bit" or "chiptune." Hell, call the genre "video game music" if you want. But referring to the genre as "keygen music" is hella obscure, and its use is probably limited to the group of people who actually know what the hell key generators are, and that some people actually put [i]music[/i] into their key generators.


Here's an analogy:

Calling [i]that style[/i] of music "keygen music" instead of "chiptune" is like calling this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yM4Tb9mkqTo) "geisha music" instead of "shamisen music."

Sure geishas have traditionally played shamisens. But the instrument is a frickin shamisen, and its use is much broader.

Nujabes, Asobi Seksu, Utada, toe, Zazen Boys, and Radiohead. And the pillows, but that's usually all the time.

Exactly. "The internet" - which when referring to a group of people doesn't typically refer to every user on the internet, but rather a core group of users who are intimately familiar with the internet and internet culture. People who know what the Pirate Bay and Slashdot are; the successors to the usenet generation - hell, the people who still use usenet (all three of them). I mean, "keygen music" [i]is[/i] somewhat obscure, in the grand scheme of things, but I would have expected a person who regularly visits reddit and posts on an internet forum, let alone the webmaster of that forum who has a computer science degree from a top university, to have been in on the joke. As far as the "official" genre name as decreed by Wikipedia, I never contested that we're talking about "chiptune music" - or that you would ever call it "keygen music" outside of the boundaries of the internet.
