Re: Sawao Yamanaka solo album - Discharge - 6/23/2010
It's not bad, and I like how it seems relatively distinct from a Pillows/Predators stuff. But I do agree about his pronunciation of English, it does seem to have gotten worse. Just listen to 'Subhuman'... it sounds like a different singer on that track, what happened?
I'm really interested to hear the track he does with Kuhara though, I can't imagine he would allow it to be anything less than great.

I think this is a fine song. Mellow, but it's nice on the ears. I think it's a cool thing that he's working with Yoko here again. I would like to see more of that.

It is much better than his solo work from my room is delicious.
Wrong Vacation and Nobody Can Find Me were both great. But I already learned to dismiss anything you say, way back when:
My girlfriend & friends from Japan were the ones who told me this. I had shown them the music I write and they told me the melodies have a Japanese flavor to them.
And then when you totally punked out when asked to define, or even record, what you mean by "Japanese flavor." Remember that? Good times. Then you said that you, as opposed to us other IMers, "have a life." Oh wow.
I never said never said Wrong Vacation, Nobody Can Find Me, Birthday, or Clare Butterfly were bad songs. I like them, I just think this sounds alot better. And if you just dismiss what I say why bother replying to it. Yeah I have a life I hope you do to. Way to hold a grudge over nothing.
Anyways any word on who the drummer is? And does anyone else not find it funny that Jun is playing a Mustang bass.

Eh, I dig the song quite a lot. Forget about the undecipherable lyrics, the actual music and music video are filled with quite a bit win, enough imo to easily make up for the lyrics (plus I'm sure once we actually get the actual lyrics they'll be better than we expected.) As far as comparing it to the likes of Wrong Vacation and the other Delicious compilation songs I say its a bit pointless since they each have their own unique merits that make them great songs. At least thats how I feel anyways.

Wow, I wasn't expecting to really care for this song. Really dig it, though. The chick from the Noodles and Sawao sound pretty great together. I hope the rest of the solo tracks have her on backing vocals. I'm a sucker for vocal harmonies. That's why I bought the Pop Chocolat album after only hearing their first song.

Re: Sawao Yamanaka solo album - Discharge - 6/23/2010
dawn speech is really something else. its nice soothing, melodic, and uncomplicated like alot of the slow songs from pml/lb era pillows without sounding like a pillows song.
I want this release.
also it's nice to see Sawao in a more normal hairstyle. I was beginning to worry that he was becoming too much of a rock star. Maybe something humbled him a bit.

Re: Sawao Yamanaka solo album - Discharge - 6/23/2010
A couple of things about "Dawn Speech":
I haven't listened to this song since the first time I heard it on Youtube... and I still remember a couple of things about it.
- I liked the lead guitar line placed over the chorus. - The third guitar that was layered of the entire song is nice, and it reminds me of "Sad Fad Love" - Solo is pretty good, but there's a few "dead" spots in it where Sawao just plays the same note rhythmically (poor transitional material for a solo)
So yeah, I'm listening to it again. And my opinions remains unchanged. It's pleasant.

Re: Sawao Yamanaka solo album - Discharge - 6/23/2010
I think the mellow feeling that the song gives off is refreshing. the pillows' last two albums were pretty much a mix of grunge and alt-rock, so I missed mellow songs. It's almost like Funny Bunny.

I like Purple Moonlight. Not a fan of the trem effect he has on his voice, though.
edit: and the lyrics are a little whacky.
"I will not listen to rock tonight. I told such falsehood. I may be high."
wat
