The WI version perfectly captures both the cosmic and sentimental nature of the lyrics, whereas the TB version is just a grungier (shittier) note-for-note copy, that completely loses the cosmic feeling of the original. If you disagree, you have absolutely no concept of what this song is about.
This.

I just listened to both of them and I see what you're saying. The WI version is almost dream-like, but the TB loses that effect for whatever reason.
I like both of them a lot, but I came across the Turn Back version first. That's probably why I favor it a little--because it was my first experience with how awesome the song is.

Turn Back all the way.
The original just doesn't have as much emotion in it.
The drum beat on WI ... are hard on the ears...
WAT. That's, like, one of his best drumming performances. Anyways, I just listened to the Turn Back version, and I like it, but I definitely prefer the WI version. It's got a really nice dream-like atmosphere, and I personally think that Sawao exhibits a lot more emotion in the WI version, especially when singing the "ZUTTOOOOOOOOOOO!" bit.

The drums are 'literally' hard on the ears for me... It might just be me maxing the volume but man does that drum beat want to pop my eardrums.

Re: Bokura no Hare Suisei / Our Halley's Comet
I probably like the original version more, but the Turn Back one is actually pretty close. White Incarnation is one of my favorite albums by any band, not just the pillows, so pretty much any remake would have a steep uphill battle against that.
The drums on the original probably hurt because of the mixing. Modern albums are mixed a lot louder than CDs produced up to the mid-90s or so. This means the dynamic range is squashed and compressed, so quiet and loud parts of songs are the same volume. On older CDs, you have to crank the sound to get the same volume, the difference between loud and quiet is a lot more noticable - in this instance, Shin's snare.
