They're good, I especially liked a lot of the tracks off of Deadman and Linear. The new album was really good as well.

Wow, two years ago eh? And I was the last poster? Wierd. :?

Anyways, Nexus is actually pretty good. I had heard Little Miss Weekend and Blackhole before and wasn't too wowed by them. I was starting to think that the inclusion of this new guitarist was wasteful too. But this album's really solid, a hell of a lot better than Linear. The only thing I wish is that they would've made more use of the second guitar. There was defintiely more space filled up with it, but I feel like they could've done more with it. Still a solid album though.

Could not agree more. I feel like they're just trying too hard. The single is all right I suppose, but when you look back at songs like Tender, Rocksteady, Freezing, etc., it makes you wonder what happened.

you mean why they aren't trying to make the same songs over and over again?

I just remembered that I had Title on my computer and started listening to it again. That's the first album of theirs I heard, and the one with the most good tracks on it in my opinion. Good stuff.

I kind of agree with this, because Tender is going to be damn near impossible to beat for me. Since I haven't followed these guys a ton since Dear Deadman, though, I don't have as much perspective.

i'm pretty sure everyone's in the same boat. It sounds like you guys listened to a bunch of their early songs and are just now listening to them again and have no idea how they got from there to here. It's been like 6 years since they came out with Tender and 5 since they came out with Title. Some bands tend to change up their sound over the course of half decade or so.

I've been keeping tabs on Straightener. I thought Dear Deadman was a great album for the most part, but wasn't blown away by Linear and Nexus. Some good tracks on both for sure, but I started getting the feeling they were just trying too hard to be different. I honestly don't think the addition of the second guitarist did much. I remember thinking back 5 years ago how awesome it would be to have another guitarist in the band, but now that it's actually happened, can't say I'm too impressed. They definitely have a different sound then they did 5 or 6 years ago, and I've accepted that. I just hope they can keep putting out some quality music.

Post Re: Straightener
trying too hard to be different? Linear or Nexus wasn't Straightener's Kid A, hell it isn't even OK Computer. it's not like they suddenly decided to do some genre hopping. You're pretty hard pressed to find a band who can make practically the same album 6 or 7 times in a row and be universally acclaimed. in my personal opinion, I'd rather a band I love go out trying something different than doing the same damn thing over and over again, each album less inspired than the next. It's unreasonable to expect a band to maintain the same sound over the course of their career (unless they're Oasis or Asian Kung-Fu Generation). So again saying they're trying too hard by getting rid of their lo fi garage edge for better production and more atmosphere than their earlier albums is confusing to me. I admit Lost World's Anthology and Dear Deadman are my favorite albums by them but I still have more respect for them than a lot of bands out there for being more forward thinking than most. I guess part of it is personal opinion, yeah, but I hate it when people discourage bands they like from progressing and trying something different.
