Post cover songs
what exactly are the rules for cover songs appearing on an album?

my band wants to do a cover and we're not completely sure about the rules. this is my guess but i'm not sure:

may put cover song on album if credit is given to the original artist.

may not reproduce lyrics in linear notes without original artist's permission.

are these right? and are there more rules?

I'm really not sure. I think if your a small band doing covers, it doesn't really matter much. The band won't hunt you down and somehow find out, but yes just give credit.

As long as you credit the composer and you don't make money, you do not need permission.

I just made that up, but do the cover anyway.

I heard that you pretty much need the permission of the band/record company that owns the rights to the songs in order to put the song on a cd that you hope to sell. If you're making money, they need to also.

But if you're playing a cover live, that's okay.

Yeah, the people above got it right. You only need permission if you're going to be making money from it. So if you're making a CD for free distribution or doing a live performance, everything should be OK.
