If anything, we are undervaluing the ubiquity of Nirvana, who were undoubtedly the most popular and well-known band of the 90's, despite only existing during the first half of the decade. However, a band's longevity has nothing to do with how popular they are - consider the Beatles vs. Rush. Nor is popularity determined by how special one's music is - consider the Backstreet Boys vs...well, Rush. So, basically, in the circle of "Anyone who was alive during or who knows anything about the 90's" - which may not encompass EVERYONE - Nirvana is ubiquitous.
Anyway, no one is saying that the way you found out about SLTS doesn't make sense, we're only surprised by the extreme unlikelihood of it happening. GR's Jesus metaphor wasn't hyperbolic at all.
