Haven't seen the 2009 version yet. I'm talking on behalf of the original episodes, which I absolutely loved and made me start watching anime again.

Seen them both. "5 Centimeters Per Second" is nothing like "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time". It's more artistic and emotional. I'd strongly suggest it, great movie.

I only watched the original episodes as well. I just can't see any reason why anyone would like it other than fan service and the occasional blatantly obvious sarcastic remark. All the characters are recycled poorly written pieces of crap snagged from previous anime series. You have the airheaded chick with quadruple D's, Rei Ayanami with purple hair, polite handsome friend, and the main character who is reminiscent of, oh I don't know, every fucking protagonist in the history of japanese animation. And of course don't forget the tough tomboyish girl who's cool as ice on the outside and warm, loveable and sensitive on the inside. Oh, and she's also a fucking bitch to her friends.
Despite the overwhelming mediocrity...still a fucking blast to watch, apparently.

Just because a piece of work might not be original doesn't necessarily make it a piece of crap.

I've never seen Haruhi, but I have friends who has great taste in anime that praise it all the time...

I'm going to have to take a look at it sometime.

it does when there's not an ounce of originality in the entire series. Did I also mention that the plot is terrible? The episodes aren't even in order.

That sounds like it just doesn't click for you. I see a lot of people who seem to have fun with the episode order... I've also heard that it has to do with some type of "different dimension" type thing in the series.

I haven't seen it so I don't really know what I'm talking about... Anyways, from what I've heard about it, it seems like it can't be any worse than average for your average anime-joe.

I've only been basing my opinion of the series on fact, not just 'oh i think it's lame, it's a lame series'. Again, it's a series with unoriginal characters, an unoriginal concept, and a shitty plot. So many anime shows get away with piggybacking off of ideas from other shows these days. It's only popular because so much effort is being put into promoting it. You can't walk into a comic/anime shop without seeing a giant poster of it somewhere. You dangle a few cute anime girls in front of a bunch of pizza faced otakus and they're gonna watch the series, no matter how terrible it is.

Sounds accurate to me. I think I tried watching an ep or two once and was just like "ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...screw this." If a show is boring, predictable, and overly stereotypical for its genre, it's not going to be fun for me to watch.

Haruhi wasn't really predictable at all for me. It seemed like a regular slice of life anime, and then they just revealed the real plot and it became the weirdest shit ever.

Loved it.

Anyone seen it? Some of my friends have said its another Hideaki Anno-esque Evangelion mindfuck (otherwise another epic troll on Anno's part), but it was fucking fantastic. They also mentioned that unlike '1.0 You Are (Not) Alone' that this one takes the series in a whole new direction.
