My bad. I missed the short discussion of this piece of shit. I'll just merge this.
But each of these re-recordings is almost identical to its original, adding next to nothing new creatively while substituting generally shittier sounding vocals and blander (in my opinion) guitar tones.
where the fuck do they get off selling us New Animal, Mr. Droopy, Ladybird Girl, and Tokyo Bambi again ALREADY??!).
1) Yeah, your analysis is pretty much spot-on. I sort of enjoyed the Ellegarden/AKG/big dumb power pop rock tweak on Funny Bunny (guilty pleasure), but the rest was, as you said "almost identical, adding next to nothing new creatively while substituting generally shittier sounding vocals and blander (yes) guitar tones."
2) Would you like New Animal on the single, album, or best of album? Yeah. All pillows fans must agree: this is fucking bullshit.

Also the added advantage is that now their live performances need not be compared to the original recordings. We are to expect the OH REAAAAAHEAAAAH ONE RAIFU ending to One Life, Sawao singing over Manabe's solo in Strange Chameleon, etc. But I was late to this rant party so I'll say no more I guess.

I'll say this:
I HATE HATE HATE the re-records for Strange Chameleon, One Life, and Funny Bunny. ESPECIALLY SC and OL. They fucked One Life up, and Strange Chameleon just didn't gel.
Funny Bunny isn't as bad, I just don't like it.
The Swanky Street RS version was alright, but... yeah.
Sullivan was pure pwnage, luckily. So that's a redeeming quality.

Honestly, none of them are that bad in themselves. They're just paled by the comparison.

But I'm still going to have to go further and say that One Life re-record sounded bad. For One Life, it's not even a matter of comparing it to the original. By itself, I just don't like it.

Re: the pillows 20th Anniversary Overload! New Releases
The vocals were pretty shaky/weak on the Rock Stock versions for the most part, and the mixes are ugly to my ears.
All I can say is I'm glad I didn't waste my money on this garbage.

Bolded the bullshit. And it's Sullivan. Sariban is just how the Japanese pronounce the name, and I would know. No need to spell in wrong in English.

Well excuuuuuse me, Mr.Purist
The CD was obviously not aimed at "core pillows fans", These are songs that (if not re-released) would have never been heard by their more mainstream audience at the moment. They're pretty popular right now. They're playing at Budokan, y'know?

I agree, but then I guess Jomei's exactly where he needs to be. What, he's supposed to enjoy and respect it because it's aimed at an audience that doesn't include him?

Yeah. Basically, we know it's not aimed at us, but come on. It's right there... and it's not even close to perfect. The best I can view the re-records as (excluding Sullivan), are as an "necessary evil". I hope the "new audience" they were aiming at enjoyed the "new" recordings from Rock-Stock.

Re: the pillows 20th Anniversary Overload! New Releases
Haha, guys, how could anything ever really compare to the original Funny Bunny or One Life? The thing that really gets me about Funny Bunny are the guitars and drums. Oh my god, the tone in the original is just GODLY. I miss the wall of sound in the original One Life, but now it's easier to pick apart the instruments. Hell, how would you feel about the pillows if you were new to them and heard these versions only to discover their older albums at a later date?
Swanky Street sounds a shit load like their live versions (15th anniversary anyone?) except for Sawao's vocals. I don't have much of a problem with it, but I'm still going to plug the original version for its closeness to perfection. You can really tell the difference in Sawao's vocals. HOWEVER, I'm still going to cite the recent version of Akanai Tobira no Mae de before people give him shit.
Their overall style is becoming more mainstream pop instead of the grungy rock I fell in love with in their late-90's albums. I don't prefer it personally, but I can see other people doing so, and that's okay with me. I still really really like 1989, Ameagari, and Coyote Umi he (Hell yes!)

Yea definitely. The original was far more mellow than the Rock stock version. I think the increase in speed of the new one really takes away from the original's vibe....
Wow I haven't listened to funny bunny in a while...brings back good memories.
