I'm still getting a Mac, but at least now I can tell GR to shut up about how OSX is inherently more secure than Windows. I mean, most people already knew that, but I never really stumbled upon any reliable evidence (since Windows/Mac OS bitch-fests != reliable) until now.

Ironic, isn't it?

This isn't really a fanboy issue. Sure the words of hackers are important, but I'll still be preferring Macs over PCs in the security sector once these "hackers" start affecting normal people like me.

Sure, everyone's gotta be careful about what they do on the internet. And Microsoft and Apple still have a lot to do in terms of upping the security of their systems. Apple more so, because it hasn't really been much of an issue in the past.

But yeah, a hacker saying "Safari is easier to exploit" =/= me suddenly having to give a shit about Norton, adware, spyware, viruses, etc. It'll come in time, but I'm not concerned right now.

edit: and I don't remember saying a whole lot about OS X being "inherently" more secure than Windows. The fact that Apple has like, under 10% of the market share in terms of personal computers, plays a huge role too. Why take the time to hack Apple software if so many more people have PCs? Of course, this is changing now.

Because they're lulled into a false sense of security, duh. Just think about what that guy said in that he couldn't win twice, so he waited for an entire year to use another exploit he had.

Let's put it this way: I'll start caring about installing anti-virus software once I feel that my computer's security is legitimately threatened. Am I playing dangerously? Maybe. But I've done so for that past...what...10 years?

This is the exact (and only) issue I'm talking about. Also, while I specifically mentioned you, I was more broadly referring to the endless waves of people who believe that OS X is inherently more secure than Windows. I just couldn't help taking a jab at our resident Mac Crusader.

To clarify, if you're going to surf porn all day, OS X is still the way to go. However, if you bring up the fact that the sole reason for this is the limited market share of Apple, some Mac fanboy is always bound to say something like
-While the whole "Macs are safer because spammers/hackers don't bother to write for them" argument is true, that's not the extent of it. The full answer would include the fact that OS X is based on UNIX, which is just inherently really really secure.
and just, quite simply, be wrong.

I believe you just concluded the thread.

If anything, doing it on the Chrome is the way to go.

Well, I think a lot of Chrome's invulnerability comes from it being new and original, rather than inherently more secure - but for now, it seems like your best bet.

Also, the whole "getting viruses from porn" thing is a big exaggeration. I just used it for the cliche effect. Actually, the "getting viruses from anywhere" thing is an exaggeration. The biggest problem with Windows machines is Spyware/Adware, but that's only for inexperienced users. For power users, it's not typically an issue - I've never had a virus on my Windows machine, and I've never really had a Spyware/Adware problem, even while doing scans only every six months or so. The difference, however, is that currently using a Mac is pretty foolproof, whereas using a Windows machine requires a little more attention.

I'm a gamer, so I naturally need to have a Windows based computer. Other than that, I respect Mac and Linux equally, until the uninformed fanboys come out.

I know people who think Windows is some kind of primitive, unthinkable, horrible operating system. That, and Mac commercials, really give the userbase a bad name.

This is true. I kind of like what Microsoft is doing with their "I'm a PC/average joe" ad campaign. Even so...it's still a response to a previous idea of Apple, which unfortunately has been a trend with Microsoft lately. It's too bad, because Windows is a great system in its own right. It all depends on what you want to do with your computer. I have kind of an unnatural bias toward Macs because I grew up with them, it's what we always had at home. Even if I didn't, I'm studying design now, so I would probably have one anyways.
