Post Re: M.I.A.
Music is music whether loud or quiet, long or short,
political or spiritual, up or down, hard or soft, etc..

I really like the song. Its very poppy and consistent.
Sure the sample is taken from another artist, but it fits well
with the tone. She does good for herself, I'm not saying
shes deep and all that, but she makes her music work for
herself and her fans. Thats all that really matters.

I've tried to introduce some pillows to some of my friends and
they couldn't stand it, maybe it was the language barrier or just
uninterest in any other style of music other than Metal and Hard rock.
If you don't give something a chance, how will you ever know what it really means?
I ignore their opinions and go through my days listening to Sawao's vocals 24/7. ^_^
If you call an artist garbage or crap your no better than the people who say that
the pillows are just oriental garbage. Yes, I have been told from a few of my peers
that the pillows were oriental garbage.
I ended whatever relationship I had with them.

Fuck that, the truth can't be warped into a lie.
I won't let it happen, it won't happen.
The Pillows are the past, present, and future.

You don't necessarily have to make sense to make sense either, apparently.

First, it's good to see that most of you are still idiots.

Now, onto Maya. You all seem to forget that music doesn't necesarilly have to be good, to be good. It isn't that black or white. Sure- it ain't that incredible- but you know what? She is a very cool girl, she does her own thing, she has her own style, and she has fun- for herself because it's what she loves. She does it with confidence, and with a humble heart. And that's as genuine as could be.

If you don't like it, don't buy the fucking record- but don't be a jackass behind your sticky keyboard because you're still sitting in your room playing you're mediocre bullshit that YOU KNOW, but won't admit to yourself, will NEVER get anywhere. Ever.[/quote]

Since when is just having a good time considered art? Art is about creation. It is absolutely possible to create something great while having fun, but if you're not creating something worth a shit and just having fun, it doesn't amount to much and is open to criticism.

And when it comes to going somewhere, I know that you know that if you turn on the most popular radio station you'll hear the most awful music. Think about how popular the band Nickelback is, or Hurricane Chris or Soulja Boy. They went somewhere, but that doesn't mean that their music is worth listening to. The point that I'm trying to make here is that people are idiots and will pay for trash and that's exactly what happened with M.I.A. She's not a better person or musician than anybody else because somebody was dumb enough to buy her trendy album. Vanilla Ice was cool for a while, wasn't he?

You're absolutely right steven (also, thank you for actually making an intellectual counterpoint rather than arguing semantics), having a good time does in no way equal art. I'm not saying she's brilliant- far from it, however it's honest and I like that. Her father was a militant rebel, she was shipped all over the world, lived a tough childhood and found art as a means of escape. She never meant to be a musician, and never really considered herself one. All of it is evident in her songs, I would never put it at the top of any lists, but I appreciate it for what it is- no more no less.

I can dig that. But also I think it's fair to put music that's "far from brilliant" at the top of your list, as long as you enjoy it. Trash or not. I know I have a few bands that I absolutely love that others might consider trashy and childish. Doesn't matter though.

Post Re: M.I.A.
I genuinely wonder, why might Mozart's "Requiem" be art, but not Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby?" I assume we can all agree (or think we agree) that this is the case, but why? Is the artists intention important, or is it the final result? If Mozart wrote "Requiem" by throwing darts at a staff, would it no longer be art? If "Ice Ice Baby" had deep personal and artistic implications for Vanilla Ice, would that make it art? Does knowing this change the true nature of the work?

I might also wonder about this "genuineness" of which Replica speaks. If she didn't write the music (or perform it even), and if her entire history is a mere PR fabrication, what does that change? What if no one ever knew?

This is why I like to categorize music into "Things I Like" and "Things I Do Not," because it is all that I can justify, through my sheer desire (or lack thereof) to listen to them. Perhaps one of you can justify art and genuineness?
