Do you have anything to back this up? Because Shinto is sort of a joke. Is there really a "very religious" Shintoist?
I should have said either Shintoist OR Buddhist. Christianity isn't that recognized in Japan because most Japanese prefer traditional Japanese culture. Or at least I assume, and unless anyone has any hard evidence that suggests Sawao is anything but, this is a very safe assumption.

As has already been noted in this thread, the statistics that suggest that most Japanese are Shintoist/Buddhist are somewhat misleading because they report these as their religion, but far fewer believe in or take these religions seriously. You have to understand that despite what you might hear about Shinto and such, Japanese are, by and large, not very religious at all.

@Blank: Modding to the mods, etc. Unless there's something way out of line in this thread that I missed?

I doubt Sawao is religious. It would hold him back too much

Plus you only have to listen to like any other japanese artist to hear the word "kami", jeez people say "oh my god" daily doesn't mean they are religious.

How can religion hold someone back? I mean some don't do something because of their religiion. Yet others do MORE because of it. It's dumb that you think religion holds people back. It gives faith to people who need it. Something to help them support themselves when they need it. Just because you're some none god believer person...(something GR is ..can't remember there names) You can't say that religion holds people back! >:[

I think you read too much into the comment...

I did not say religion holds people back, I said it could ''hold Sawao back''.

In my opinion I feel that if he was religious he would maybe be different to how he is today, and may have not written some of the lyrics that he has today.

Sawao said;
It was Chaplin in "Monsieur Verdoux" who said, "Life has no meaning. All we have is desire." And he is right.
(lifted from the flcl booklet of DVD 02)

That's not something he would say if he believed in God I imagine.

I like Sawao for what he is and what he does that is why I said it could hold him back.

With all that said It would be 'interesting' if he was religious but I just don't think he is.

Also you shouldn't assume I don't believe in religion just because I said it could hold Sawao back...

LOL RELIGION THREAD.

Without religion, evil people will do evil things, and good people will do good things.

Only WITH religion can good people justify doing evil things.

I think you far underestimate the ability of humans to find justification for their actions. Certainly religion is very, very often used to bypass any hindrances that logical thinking may create for a person or group's particular modus operandi, but it is far from the only oft used excuse.

Disregard my "only." I'm indirectly quoting Christopher Hitchens, something probably got lost.
But yeah, of course humans find tons of things to justify their immoral actions. I'm just saying that religion definitely brings this element to the table in spades. Sup, Prop 8, Child Crusades, 9/11, etc etc.

Anyway.
