Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
OK. Guys, I've had a real craving for some really good anime lately. I don't care what genre, just suggest some.
"]OK. Guys, I've had a real craving for some really good anime lately. Pretty sure it's airing in Japan right now, but people are hard at work on subs for it. I was just checking it out yesterday - and I never watch new anime online. Ever. But I was curious cause I heard a few good things about it. First episode: http://tinyurl.com/69sxt5(or alternatively, just search Ga-Rei Zero on Veoh.com. Pretty much this show is way intense and has a great look to it. If you're looking for something that's definitely awesome all the way through, I'd go with Last Exile. First episode here: http://tinyurl.com/6xexpwYou'll find out if you like just with the opening credits - it gives a pretty good feeling for what the show's about. From Wikipedia: "The story revolves around Claus Valca and Lavie Head, a young courier pilot and his navigator, and their adventures in the floating world of Prester. In this romantic sky world based on stylized Victorian fashion and society, two countries, Anatoray and Disith are engaged in a long and bloody war under the supervision of the mysterious Guild. Claus and Lavie, piloting their vanship (a small, stub-winged aircraft) find themselves involved in a plot surrounding a mysterious little girl named Alvis Hamilton, whom they must deliver as 'cargo' to the much-feared neutral battleship 'Silvana'." My good points: Awesome character design. Great music. Good pacing. Slick animation, incorporating CG smoothly with traditional animation. Reaallly cool steampunk aesthetic - the whole environment is really well thought-out. So yeah. If you can, get your hands on a torrent of the Last Exile series. Check Ga-Rei Zero out on Veoh. Solid.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
I'm not an anime fan at all, so it's rare that anything really impresses me, but pretty much everything about Last Exile is simply stunning. My younger brother buys one of the DVDs every once in a while, and since he finally ordered the last two I'll finally get to see how it ends. Yay.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
I just downloaded a batch torrent of The Guyver (1980s version). It's awesome. It was the 1st or 2nd anime I ever saw. Everyone should get it NOW.

LOLZ, I happen to think Last Exile is one of the worse anime out there. I mean it's not unwatchable, but it just goes to crap from the beginning.

So what, in your opinion, is a good series? Besides Cowboy Bebop. edit: and how much of Last Exile have you seen? It's strange you say "Worst anime out there," but then implied you've watched a lot of it as you say "it just goes to crap from the beginning." Do you have a high tolerance for watching bad anime? Do you enjoy watching things you don't enjoy?

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
that simply just isn't true, I'd also like to hear how you think a series with fantastic animation and a sensible story is nearly unwatchable. There's so much horrible anime out there, the fact that the visuals in Last Exile are pretty impressive than most already puts it head and shoulders above the average series. It did take me a few episodes to get into, though. It's not my favorite series in the world, but you're crazy if you don't acknowledge how well done it was.

I remember watching a bit of it on TechTV back in the day; it seemed pretty cool.

Yeah, you sort of have to take this into account. There is SO much trash, SO much "hey lets stick some little girls in cute costumes and make a buck" SHIT out there that it offends me. Have you heard of Strike Witches? link It's about a team of girls who fight this invasion of bad guys with big guys and magical powers. But wait, none of the female characters in the series wear pants - there is no explanation for this. Oh, and some of them inexplicably sprout cat ears and tails when they go into their fight mode. So we have this team of little cat girls with big guns and LOADS OF PANTY SHOTS flying around blowing shit up. This may sound awesome to some of you, but even as a fan of catgirls, Strike Witches was SO trashy I was almost offended.
As anime is a commodity, there's a shit ton of stuff like this - weak character design, old, recycled plot, but maybe with the touch of some nice animation. It's so clearly designed to be turned into action figures, body pillows, capsule toys, and tissue boxes that it's just gross.
Did the makers of Disaster Movie, Are We There Yet?, or The Love Guru REALLY think to themselves "Wow, I've got this great story brewing in my head, and I really want to express it through the medium of film. I think people will like this."
No, they thought "Alright, a combination of X, Y, and Z will probably net me some big bucks in the theater. Let's get it done."
My point is that even if you didn't like the story of Last Exile or whatever, don't you agree that it still stands out from the swarms of bullshit anime out there? In terms of artistic vision, animation, character design or purpose? Especially artistic vision. I mean, they created this whole steampunk world that's totally different from anything I've seen. A bit more challenging than just sticking some bland characters in high school and making them go super deformed once in a while.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
Actually, Strike Witches is kinda cool, because they based the main characters off of real WWII pilots.
