During the review process prior to the release of Little Big Planet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Quran. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused.

We'll confirm the new launch date shortly.

Later versions of Ocarina of Time featured minor alterations in the final build of the game after its initial release. These alterations included the removal of a Muslim chant in the background music of the Fire Temple and the moon and star symbol that was on the Mirror Shield and other objects scattered throughout the game (signs, blocks, etc) for their Islamic references. The moon and star symbols were replaced with more generic ones. Ganondorf's blood was also altered from red to green.[/quote]

Are these changed valid? Do you believe videogames should/could have religious references? Is it THAT much of a big deal?

It's a big deal to Muslims, so if they want Muslims to purchase their games, then yes, it is a big deal.

I can understand these reference in a game that mimics real life, but fantasy games really don't need real world religious symbols.

Honestly, why even bother putting Muslim references in games anymore? The majority of Muslims probably couldn't care and if it's something positive, they'd probably be happy. However, the extremists or just even the equivalent of a group of WASP women pissed off at violence in video games tend to take this whole Islam in video games thing way too serious. It's their religion though and if they can't do it themselves, I can understand why they wouldn't want anyone else to.

Ahhhh, I remember these, and I noticed them even when I was like, 11. Because my friend had the first release and I had the later one.

I don't think they would be happy, I think they would see it as disrespectful.

Although the majority probably wouldn't even notice stuff like this in the first place, all it takes is a few vocal dissidents and the company has a lot of bad publicity, so they'd rather cut the references early before people find them later and make it an even bigger mess. Violence and sex is one thing, but religion is a bit touchier.

The muslims get mad because they up something about their religion into a video game. Yet a movie like Religious comes out with out having one of them nag about how "bad" it is to there religion? Blah.

They're safer taking these things out now, as opposed to later, when it hurts their sales. I'd rather hear of any complaints before the game gets out, as strange as that may sound. Does Religulous rip on Islam or does it make a joke or two, Metal? I haven't seen it yet.

I haven't seen Religulous yet. But I saw they were interviewing the creators of Religulous while back. They talked about how "stupid, and dumb" religion was in general. They don't believe in the stories that were written. So since they don't believe in that how come the Islamic people aren't offended by it? They aren't banning that? In most games when they put something that's from a religion most of the time no one really notices. I never knew that the moon from the mirror shield had any significance to Islam.

I remember reading about that in Legacy of kain Soul Reaver there was some Arabic wittings there. Yet no one really said anything until yep some Arabian playing the game brought it up.
It's just people think of games then being more then JUST games.

As a person who one day wishes to be in the gaming industry, I think it's silly for people to be offended of just the appearance of something religious in games. I'd understand if it was negative, but yeah.

Either way, I think art needs to stay away from things like religion in order to steer clear from censorship.

Maybe it's just used to steer some controversy? Remember all those racial sony psp commercial with the squirrels? The talking mexican thing? Maybe people like how it looks, or are part of that religion and they want to show something about it. Like if i like a girl and i include her in my song or something like that.

It's people who make a big deal about it. It's just a GAME god stupid people who can't realize that. >:[

Islam has rules regarding religious depictions/use of religious materials out of religious context, which (based on my limited knowledge) seem to be stronger than the rules of other religions. However, apparently there isn't a specific rule about this particular usage.

http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/10/ ... ng-to-mtv/

Maybe Sony is being too sensitive, maybe not, but honestly no one really seems to be particularly mad about it (except maybe the people who have to work overtime to get the song removed at the last minute).
