Yeah, I dunno about Tabuchi. She's a demon, and a decent amount of it must be in the effects she uses. But there's just nothing inherently demonic about P-90s. Pound for pound, I think you could get crazier shit done with an American Strat, but what do I know. :?

Sorry for being a nube, but what does phasing mean in pickups...

I just got my mustang :shred: and it has that super-unique (complex) on-off-on pickup config. but I just don't know what the second "on" means. I read up on wiki and it says that it reverses the phasing. PHASING?! :dizzy:

When in doubt, turn to google or wikipedia.

I wonder if the fact that her guitar is total vintage material has anything to do with her sound (and I'm guessing it does indeed have a decently large impact), but yeah, I'd love to know the exact effect she uses in Tattoo ARI to make it SCREAM the way it does. I wonder if that'd work for a tele...

You could make a tele squeal pretty easily, just throw some type of OD in front of it (like a Tubescreamer) and just crank the volume on the thing and the gain on the amp.

No, but I mean the particular kind of tone from that song. I'm wondering if I could get it with my tele.

Wait wait wait. Rhino, your Jazzmaster doesn't have P-90s in it; they look similar on the surface, but underneath the cover is a pickup that's shaped pretty similarly to a Strat pickup. A P-90 sounds waaaay thicker, and it's an entirely different design than a Jazzmaster pickup. Most P-90s I've played were wound too hot, I don't think I've ever encountered a wimpy one.

I don't remember if you Jazz is a Japanese or American model. The Japanese pickups are just Strat pickups under a Jazzmaster cover. And lots of people dislike the stock American ones, too. You might try asking around at Offset Guitars since these people love Jazzmasters and will have plenty of recommendations for getting the sound you want. In Tabuchi's case, it's probably a combination of pickups (her main Jazz is a '65, I think, and probably sounds a bit hotter than earlier models since Fender changed their pickup winding procedure around that time) and pedals+amp.

I never cease to be amazed at the lengths (and money) people will go to in order to eliminate hum. I've barely ever noticed it in any guitars in my house; and I like a pretty raw, unrefined sound anyway, so I wouldn't have a problem with it, anyway. People seem to just blow the whole issue way out of proportion.

Also Rhino, you can get Lace Sensor pickups for Teles, but I'd recommend otherwise. Lace Sensor pickups work GREAT for people who use a lot of effects and more complex setups since they give a bit more clarity, but all the Lace-equipped guitars I've played sounded... kinda "icy" when clean and not quite as expressive as normal Tele pickups. So if you can find a Lace-equipped guitar you might want to try it out and see how you like it.

A Place To Bury Strangers (and precursor band Skywave) use single-coil Jazzmasters combined with totally badass Death By Audio fuzz pedals, and they sound like the end of the world.

Yeah, it's an American Jazz, and I've also heard some people say the pickups leave a bit to be desired.
And the Death by Audio pedals are interesting...but entirely impractical for 99.9% of all guitarists. It's another nail in the coffin for the notion that experimental rock music = "It's OK to sound like complete shit."

edit: Check the serial number/SKU on this one. http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/Jason_Lo ... t_P559.cfm

double edit: Does anyone know if you can fit regular Lace Sensors (not the Telecaster Lace Sensors) into unmodded Teles? Lace Sensors seems pretty Strat specific...is there anything (like dimensions of pickup cavities) barring me from putting a Silver Lace Sensor into my Tele bridge?

Ok, I just returned my mustang... :(

It kinda sucked... No sustain and the pickups just weren't hot enough. I'd have to turn my tiny (easily distorted) 15 watt frontman to 7 gain to get any decent distortion. It really disappoints me, but wtv. If anyone out there is planning to get one, just buy a mexican strat or tele instead because your just waisting a few hundred extra dollars on nothing.

Perhaps someone should have researched the option, or listened to the advice of his peers. :o
I dont know if was already mentioned, but it's pretty much a given that stock Mustang pickups blow. Seriously blow.
I was on some guitar forum a long time ago, and someone characterized the sounds of Fender guitars as something like this:
Strat - clank
Tele - twang
Jazzmaster/Jag - jangle
Mustang - boink

As for tone, output, and sheer usability (talkin about the whammy bar)...stock Mustangs must go under quite a few upgrades (or so I've heard). Jomei would be the one to talk to about this. However I will say the Mustang is one of my favorite guitar designs ever, coming ever so close to the JM.
I dunno man, if you liked the FEEL of the guitar, I would have tried to swap the pups at least.

And also, the one glaring thing I saw in your post: your amp! A $3000 guitar is going to sound like a crappy 15w amp if you play it through a crappy 15w amp.
If you're spending a decent amount of cash on your instrument, you really owe it to yourself to upgrade your amp too - A kickass guitar can't be kickass unless it has a decent amp to go with it.

As for Mustangs vs. Teles and Strats - if it's the Mustang sound you want, then you won't find it in a Tele or a Strat (although Strats come close). As should be pretty obvious by now, the sound of a Mustang isn't THAT desirable for most guitar players. But man..you could go places with a pickup swap...I'm tellin' ya...

Dude, I have a much larger 65watt amp, but I used my 15watt because my 65watt wasn't getting enough distortion. So, logically, I used my smaller (easily distorted) amp for the job, and it STILL wasn't enough.

I think I'm going to invest in a american tele or strat, but I'm not sure which one I want. Any advice?

You should've considered trying the Mustang along with a distortion pedal. Just drop the $40 on that one BOSS distortion pedal and you should be ok...
What guitar are you rocking now? How long have you been playing? Personally, I'd recommend the Standard Series...I think you should really KNOW you want an American Tele or Strat and can use it to its potential. I mean, it's your cash, use it how you want - but consider value here too.

Yes, I'm absoloutely sure I want an American, I want it to be my last solidbody electric for a long long time while I focus on other things to spend my money on such as pa systems, hollowbodies, and a decent acoustic.

Anyway, I've been playing for almost three years and previous to my next purchase, I've been "rocking" an Ibanez RG. I bought it before I knew anything about guitars and only got it because I thought it looked cool. So, I can't really say that I hate it or love it but I definitely want something that sounds a little different.

So I changed my mind  I'm not really ready for an american yet so I chose two choices which are inbetween. What do you think?

Depends on what you'll be using it for, the Thinline would probably be better for rhythm work while the Lite Ash is a bit better suited for lead work. Personally I've had my eye on getting either a Lite Ash Strat or Tele but thats just me.
