Ash is a lot lighter, and the grain is kind of better looking.

Tell the people that work at the store they're fucking asshats if they won't let you try an instrument. Just pick something up and play it, and if they say anything just tell them you'll never buy anything from their fucking store.
How can anyone run a music store and be tight about your products? Bah.
as for a price range on a guitar/bass: no more than 1000
Damn. I hate you.
Look at it this way. If you want something telesque that looks cool, is unique, and sounds cool, you don't need to splurge on an MIA. I suggest either a '69 or '72 thinline telecaster, or a solid body '72 tele. Look everywhere for stores that have those. With all of those price tags set at around $700, you should have left enough for a good bass, or a start on saving up for a really good bass.
Also, ash is heavy as fuck, but a lot of people prefer the tone. Alder is a considerably lighter and many people like the tone it gives also. In my opinion, lightness is more important than a minor tone change, so alder > ash.

seriously Ciidric. the other day i was in there to buy strings. i wanted to get the reinforced EB super slinkys but the guy went into who its only for a certain type of tremolo i can't remember the name of right now. if i want advice on something, i will ask for it.
what guitars were you going to suggest, kelp?
i had been eyeing the tele thinlines since i first saw them in musicians friend. i just thought they looked cool and sound cool. the F hole give it some class. plus, the 69 thinline would make me an instant sawao/manabe clone!

kelp just got shanked in the face.
Yeah, sorry jedi. I'm just fed up with assholes running music stores. Heh, I guess I just have a thing against most of them - they make it extremely hard for some people.
Go with the thinline

I know someone who worked at a guitar center and he said that they make money off of commission. In other words, if they don't sell anything, they don't get any money. He said it was terrible.
