Re: Who's actually going to buy New Animal?
Ogg Vorbis is generally considered to be better, as is mp4 and m4a.
Ogg is rarely used, but m4a is more common. It's rare to see mp4 files that aren't videos, but still. It all depends on who's ripping their shit.
I think other people on the forum know more than I do about this though (Looking at you sheer). I've only had a glance at the stuff.
So if I convert an mp3 to one of those formats, will the quality go up? I know that converting can lessen the value anymore... so I want to know.
The only time I get m4a files is when I rip from discs...

Re: Who's actually going to buy New Animal?
Your quality can't just "go up" from an mp3 to something else. It doesn't work that way. If you get a shitty quality mp3 and converted it to m4a, it'd be a shitty quality m4a. The only difference between the file types is how it encodes information. m4a file formats just encode more information than mp3s, hence the better quality.
You can test the theory yourself by converting an m4a into an mp3 back into an m4a. Most of the time, the m4a won't sound like the original unless if the original wasn't of high quality to begin with.

That's what I thought. I basically tried that out with a Mr. Children song of mine (World's End). It was encoded in mp3 (I downloaded) and I converted to AAC (mp4) to see if there was a difference... and there wasn't.
Yeah. That's why I'm buying the discs.

Re: Who's actually going to buy New Animal?
My usual thing is buying the CD and ripping it to 320kbps mp3s so I can easily play it on mp3 players. For albums I listen to on my computer a lot I'll rip them with FLAC, too.
If you're putting up 320kbps mp3s up against other formats (that take up about the same amount of space), there really won't be a difference unless a) you have really picky ears and b) have great headphones / speakers.
I was thinking of uploading New Animal in FLAC when it comes out.

This is true. Sometimes the quality sucks due to having a shitty pair of headphones/speakers.

Daaaamn. I hope you enjoy the idea of a few dozen albums quickly decimating your hard drive space. Seriously, FLAC is hardcore stuff. :/

Re: Who's actually going to buy New Animal?
There are like three or four releases I want coming out on the same day, so I probably won't be buying this one. Go!Go!'s new album is a lot more enticing, even if it's a cover album.

It sounds noticeably better than mp3s, even on my good-but-not-spectacular speakers, and 300-400mb an album really isn't much. It sucked a few years ago, but now that the average hard drive is far cheaper and more expensive than they used to be ($120 for the 750gb drive I just switched over to) it really isn't too bad.
I only do it for albums I'm currently listening to anyway so it never really takes up too much space. I think I have maybe 20 or so albums in FLAC right now and it doesn't even take up 10gb, which didn't make me cringe even on my old 250gb setup.
The really hardcore stuff is 24/96 wave, it's so good it's pointless.. I think they might be one of the formats they're giving away that new Nine Inch Nails album in.

I bought Ladybird Girl at a record store in Tokyo last year so I might end up purchasing it when I go over there this year (as well as finishing up my collection, maybe!). I'll download it too.
