Yeah but it's possible that maybe the girl is a representaion of something else. Alot of musicians and poets do that. They use the opposite sex to represent a time or to convey feelings, and not to, but in general. If it is about a girl directly, then what girl? I dunno, sorry if this seems like stupid rambling but after listening to NIN my entire life, I can't commit myself to taking lyrics for face value.
At any rate, my air resistor shirt is now ruined thanks to a stupid peice of metal that no one has fixed. I am so pissed I could scream. I hope my mom can fix it.
Also, I did not know that Jiro was married... Infact all I know about Jiro is that he's the bassist for GLAY, he was the bassist for the predators, and he looks alot like Daishi...

It doesn't have to be any specific girl. It could be any girl.
However, you can read as much or as little into lyrics as you want, and can probably find pretty much any meaning or lack thereof to any song ifyou really want to. If you don't want it to be about a girl, but about some idea, good for you, but it's pretty apparent that he's singing to/about a girl in his love songs.
I mean, do you mean to tell me that when he sings "You are my light" in One Life, "My song is your song" in FOTP, "I'm glad to have met you" in Strange Chameleon, "resounding at the end of my loneliness, brand new lovesong, this song is for you" in Bran-new lovesong, and on and on through all those songs, that he's just singing about some ideal? He's singing about love for or to some girl, whoever she is at the time.

Shin-chan looks cool in the Ladybird Girl pv. lol
edit: DAMNIT! MY FRIEND TOLD ME TO GET THE SINGLE AT TSUTAYA BUT I DIDN'T LISTEN BECAUSE IT WAS TOO FAR OF A WALK FROM WHERE WE WERE GOING AND THE OTHER RECORD STORE WAS ON THE WAY. She just wanted me to go there because her mom had a point card for Tsutaya though. We went to "Vanda Music Train"?
Fool on the Planet is ANYTHING but some sort of quiet acceptance of anything, it's a song saying he'll give up anything but her, and he'll never stop believing in himself.
He's saying that although everything else is changing, he can accept that, but he will not change. It's kind of halfway.

One Life-That's could be referring to anything
Fool on the Planet- It does not have to be a girl he's talking about,he could be talking about a place.
Strange Chameleon-Although he's probably talking about a girl, he could be describing some metaphor for life.

Look at the other lines, he's saying he wont' doubt himself, he won't forget, and he won't change. Basically it's saying "no matter what, I'm going to be myself, and I'm going to keep loving you, and I won't lose you."

Man. To think that I sometimes feel shallow for not paying much attention to lyrics... I suppose I would rather have a long-winded discussion over gear or the instrumentation or something.
However, I will say that One Life has some of my favorite lyrics ever.

One Life is a beast whose appreciation gets on some people's nerves, although I'll never know why. The song is just pure awesome and full of win.
Motion for an in-depth look at pirrows lyrics! Can I get a second!?

Mare, I'm just saying to keep an open mind. I'm not going to jump on the lyrics and say "OH HOLY FUCK IT'S ABOUT A GIRL BECAUSE HE SAYS 'SHE'." People refere to cars as "she" and "her" and give them girl names... You said it yourself that you can pick apart lyrics and make them say whatever you want them to. I mean shit, do you think that Trent Reznor was talking about pigs when he said "all the pigs all lined up"? NO he was not. It was a metaphor for his view of society or some stupid shit.
My point here is that, since we don't know this man at all, we can't jump to conclusions about what he's writting about most fo the time because we're not him (unfortunately) and will never know for sure. SO calm the fuck down and consider possibilies...
Also, thsi doesn't change the fact that my favorite shirt is now ruined, which by the way is the more pressing matter here, not Sawao's dick.

Ugh. I'm totally calm. I thought we were just having a fun discussion over different ways to look at the lyrics, not an argument of "SAWAO WRITES ABOUT GIRLS HE LOVES/LOVED VS. SAWAO WRITES USING GIRLS AS METAPHORS." :/
You want to look at his songs as a metaphor rather than being a love song about some girl. Cool. I see them as love songs about some girl, not using the girl as some sort of metaphor. There's going to be different ways different people will look at them. Geez.

olol, another conversation stemming from a post of mine spirals out of control on IM. Positive or negative, such recent contemplations have produced shitstorms. I realize that we must cut these things off at the source, so... I guess...
It's time for a vacation. See you all in a week. Go watch that Cowboy Troy video I posted in Music and make fun of me for liking it while I'm away.

It was a fun discussion, but your words seemed kind of standoffish.
I have no problems with thinking that Sawao writes love sings, infact I think it's really cute that maybe they are. But I also like thining that maybe he's talking about something else and using chicks as a metaphor. But I'm not going to conclude that they're all about a nonexistant girl just because of a line that says "she" or "her".
Sawao works constantly, I don't see him having time to date alot. And his work talks mostly about himself. It just seems to me that he's using metaphors here instead of actual people. BUT I won't doubt the possibilty that he has made close relationships with women, but that doesn't mean his songs are about women/a woman specifically.
I'm just wondering why you or anyone would automtically say that Sawao is writting about women in a song that is vague and could be about anything. To me FOTP reads like a song that he wrote about himself more then anyone else. Several of his songs read that way.

Ah, gotcha. I'm not concluding that they're about a nonexistant girl, just that we don't know who the girl is as Sawao doesn't really talk much about his personal life. :3 And as for why I think they're about a certain girl, when I write a song like that, it's about a certain girl.
Certainly a lot of his songs are about himself, and are self-reflective. I didn't say FOTP was ONLY a love song, just that he's singing that song to someone, probably a girl he loves/loved.

Nah, the only girl he cares about is Kim Deal. Unless you're secretly Kim Deal and if that's the case I want you to know that I hate your music.

lol I can wish.
Sorry to break your serious conversation about the secret of Sawao's lyrics though. I was actually following it and thought it was really cool.
