They wrote ROSS before the FLCL offer even came about. Sheerheartattack does have a point though. I mean fucking Smile came out post-FLCL.
Now we wait...
Edit: ROSS was written all the way back in 98/99. I wish I could dig up the interview - it may be in one of the non-text ones on this very site, but I'm too lazy.

Actually, the Ride on Shooting Star single came out AFTER FLCL was aired.
I didn't forget about it, but I will agree that sheerheartattack won a thread with a clean KO.

EDIT: Well, not necessarily written specifically for the show, since odds are ROSS is just like Scarecrow: it was surely played live many, many times before FLCL happened.

Actually, he's right. IIRC, Ride on Shooting Star and I Think I Can were written especially for FLCL. Possibly part of the reason that, as sort of the odd songs out, they had their own singles right after the show aired yet weren't on any albums.

I remember reading somewhere that Sawao wrote Ride on Shooting Star before they were asked to do the music, and it was his favorite song at the time so he gave it to Kazuya for the ending theme.
However, I could be wrong.

No,they wrote ROSS and I think I Can specially for FLCL Gainax asked them to create two new songs for the anime which are all awesome I'm sure 100% ,if I'm not mistaken the director really liked ROSS he even changed the original ending to make Ride on Shooting Star the ending theme for FLCL.

I've said it before, but ya, I've heard a studio recording of Scarecrow (whether or not the album version I haven't a clue) and it was just fine. Got it stuck in my head a number of times actually, which was swell - though I can't seem to conjure up the melody at the moment :0(
