sawao writes the lyrics, but they work together for the music. no way in hell that he comes up with the drum beat, bass, and lead guitar lines, though there is no way to tell the amount of influence he has on the overall process.

eh. if the song is not interesting to start off with, i doubt there's much the other members can do.

It's actually quite possible for him to come up with all those aspects, especially since Shin and Jun's parts are so simplistic (even the other bassists' parts are quite reasonable, despite popular belief). Since he plays guitar, and we really don't know the extent of his lead guitar-crafting skills, I'd say it's very possible. Also, if you can write for guitar, it's highly likely that you can write for bass as well. The only odd one out is Shin, but like I said, his beats are quite simple.
The only reason I think it's unlikely is that in a band of four talented musicians where there is one main songwriter, I doubt the other members would put up with it. But then again, through interviews and such, it seems that Sawao is pretty much the be all and end all of the group, making all the decisions, etc.

It does seem that way, but here's my best guess...
Sawao comes up with a basic melody. Manabe comes up with a lead guitar line that plays off of that melody, but doesn't stray too far from it / comes up with a solo, etc. Sato then comes up with a fitting drum beat and Jun does whatever the hell he wants.

on the other hand, it could be that the reason the others do solo projects is because he's such a nazi that they need a creative outlet.

if this is true that sawao is the main "composer" of the pieces i would be astonished. i would have a new found respect for him. as i would see myself in him. (not in a perverse way). and my favorite would change from manabe to the heart throb sawoa
