 Jeff Buckley
He makes Sawao sound retarded. Let's talk about it.

jeff buckley is my favorite musician
grace album was amazing and he really had some great songs in my sweetheart the drunk too bad he never really finished it
i played a cover of a hybrid hallelujah/morning theft at a school show last year- i have video but i need to cut it down to fit things like youtube
but his music grips your emotions sooo well and 10 times as much when you play it on stage

In the live albums, he sounds amazing. I really like the guitar in his songs.

The thing about Jeff Buckely is, he pretty much thrashed other "90's Rock" bands. Buckley is obviously a infintely better singer than Cobain, but all of JB's songs are FAR more musically complex than typical "alternative rock." He was a great songwriter to top it all off. Oh, and let's not forget that he could play some great guitar parts- live.
I suspect that he never achieved mainstream popularity because, let's face it, it's a little tough to get into much of his music. I'm pretty sure that So Real, for example, would really turn off most newcomers to his music. (Though I really like that song.)
