Sorry to bring up FLCL again, but I have to agree that Eureka 7 is definitely influenced by our beloved OVA. It reminded me of a cross between FLCL and Evangelion (the episode when the mech goes all berserk?), so there's a definite Gainax flavor.

I know BONES made it; that doesn't mean that Gainax's works didn't influence it.

yeah, I've just seen screenshots, but it definitely has a VERY similar artstyle going. I really wanna check it out soon, but I really gotta finish watching Last Exile, Beck, and Azumanga Daioh.
Heh. Apparently in Eureka 7, there are two buddy technicians named Jobs and Woz. An obvious play off of Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple) and Steven Wozniak (Co-founder of Apple). It makes my Apple cultist heart flutter

Anyone watch Fate/Stay Night here? It's pretty cool, and has its light moments of humor.
the episode when the mech goes all berserk?
18, I believe. (and they're evas, not mechs )
Beck
Near the top of my list for watching . . . I've heard it's awesome. Doesn't Sawao voice act in it (like a minor, brief role)? I remember seeing that somewhere.
Anyone watch Fate/Stay Night here? I don't (yet), but I know a lot of people who do and love it.

I was talking about the episode of Eureka 7. I was comparing the early episode in Eureka 7 in which a mech goes berserk to the several instances of berserk Evas in Evangelion. Nice try at correcting me, though.

Oh, whoops. I haven't seen Eureka 7, so I don't know anything about it.
Evangelion
Biggest. Dissapointment. Ever.
Adult swim has been running it so now everyone can see how utterly dissapointing it is to watch the ending only to find out that you just wasted the last 650 minutes of your life watching a potentially good series.
I only got 5 minutes into End of Evangelion, right about when they show Shinji's hand for a few seconds after being alone in a hospital room with a comatose Asuka. Gross. Fucking Gross.

I really like Evangelion. Granted, the TV ending is unsatisfying, but it's interesting nonetheless. End of Evangelion has myriad symbols that don't really lead to any deep meaning, but it's a beautifully-done film and a satisfying end to the series.
btw, my avatar used to be a picture of Shinji's baby-battered hand.

I was utterly pissed when they showed that part like "everything was a just dream", I didn't hate the tv ending, what I hated at the time were the otaku, Evangelion was like naruto back then (talking about overestimation), they were annoying talking about how you could start to undestand the series only if you had watched it 24546465465468468 times and how it was an example of anime that could be enjoyed by everyone and how it was the best thing ever etc. I see nothing that amazingly gross on that part, shinji is 14 years old afterall.

1: Well, it wasn't really a "just a dream" cop out, though it was pretty surreal. Shinji accepts the Human Instrumentality Project (Completion), but...that's basically ignoring reality. It's hard to understand, and I don't really have a decent grasp on it. It just seemed like Completion was the cheap and "fake" way out.
2: Yeah, there were/are some pretty hardcore Eva-heads out there. But when compared to Naruto, I think it's much much more deserving of indepth analysis. I could be very wrong, but from what I've seen (and heard), Naruto really lacks subtext. It's basically just another action/teamwork show for young adults/children that's well done and really appealing. I mean. Ninjas, man. While discussion of the comments on society that Eva makes, as well as the significance of religious symbolism may seem a bit obsessive...I think it's necessary if you want to see the series from different angles. Although it might not make a lot of sense outright on the first viewing, there's definitely some depth there.
3: About the masturbation thing. Well, I quote The Eva Otaku Page. In small text, cause this post is taking up way too much space already.
1) Shinji is completely messed up. He has hit rock bottom and when the only person he feels can help him (Asuka) doesn't he sinks lower into his depression (for obvious reasons). Then, he accidentally pulls open Asuka's shirt and right there in front of him is a half naked girl, who has shot down his advances time and time again. He reacts out of desperation and sexual frustration. An important point has been made about Shinji.
2) Shinji is real. Shinji is not some noble, self-sacrificing wiz-kid - instead he is "normal". He sees sex, and he reacts to it.
3) He is under tremendous stress. He has just found out that Rei is a clone, that Asuka is pretty much dead, that Misato seems to have abandoned him, and above all else, he just killed the only person he opened his heart up to and the only person who told Shinji, "I like you". Look at all those things in Shinji's life that have happened in little less than a week! It is easy to see why Shinji did what he did. But do not be confused, Shinji quite clearly did not approve of what he did, either.
4) Shinji does not enjoy it. He says "Saitei da, orette" (I am pathetic/I am the lowest of the low/I am fucked up/I am the worst/I'm scum etc.) and leaves Asuka more disgusted with himself then ever. This is done to show that Shinji is not maliciously visually raping Asuka, but that he is still a child who saw something he (thought) he liked, and reacted to it. Do I hold it against him or do I think he's a bad character because of it? No, of course not. Was I shocked with that scene? To a point. But overall, I found it a deeply emotional scene that effectively conveyed Shinji's current mental condition.
The directors' commentary on the new Platinum edition DVDs is pretty interesting. The people who went into adapting it into English are very knowledgable about all the different types of mythology and religion that Eva references. Really makes you think much more about how much of a crazy genius Anno is.
