You'd get arrested for carrying razors.

but if you stop comparing it to PML, or the holy trio, whatever, I found that it's actually pretty damn rocking.
heh, is that what folks here are calling HB, LB, and RH? The Holy Trio? There's no question the band is a holy trio, of course.

The two songs I didn't like, well, they just aren't my faves. I don't skip them when I play the record, so I definately don't hate them. I just can't get into them. I don't like to compare new stuff to old stuff just for the sake of nostalgia, "Oh, I liked the late 90's stuff better and I'm bitter so I'll rate their new stuff badly." You just end up looking like an ass. Good Dreams wasn't awful either, I can't believe some of you don't have anything nice to say with that one. Penalty Life... well, it's Penalty Life. The sound of the pillows may be changing a little more each record, but dammit, their spirit remains untouched. Every time I play a new pillows album, I always get that same feeling, that I'm glad I got to know them through their music.

Oh, and for the people here who constantly advertise their early albums, I think White Incarnation is very good.
I was pretty sure I heard Sawao sing "[something something] Lostman" towards the end of the title track. I was right :D

Doko ni itemo MISUKYASUTO
Hitorigoto ga fueta ROSUTOMAN
Sasowarenai no ni kotowaru SERIFU wo oboete

Some of the other English words in this seem like parts of pillows song names as well. Coincidence?

:|
Those lyrics are:

"No matter where I go, I'm still MISCAST
A LOSTMAN whose soliloquies are only increasing
Even though you wouldn't invite me out, I've already memorized lines of refusal."

My Foot is good.

Considering most people here probably listened to albums like Happy Bivouac and Runners High before the early 90's music, I don't think anyone highly regards the pre-PML music just for nostalgia. The two styles of music are pretty drastically different so it shouldn't be surprising if people like one style over another.

I can also understand why some people can be bitter or upset since The Pillows will probably never go back to the style of White Incarnations or Living Field. If you like all their stuff, then good for you. But if someone says they prefer the old music than the current, it's not for the sake of acting like a music snob. It's a valid opinion.

My review:

My foot: A. Great way to open the CD.
Rock 'n' Roll Sinners: A-. It's like a more rockin' version of "OVER AMP".
The Air Resister: B+. A fun song for all.
The Third Eye: A+. Still rocks after two months! (There may be a chance that I might get this played on my college radio station. Those in the Boston area, it's 91.7 WMWM. This and more in a future thread.)
Mighty Lovers: B+. Great Beatles homage in the chorus.
Nonfiction: B. Still good; but not as good as TTE.
Degeneration: A. I don't see why some of you don't like it. I know it sounds like the Predators; but it's more Cobain-ish (w/o the part where he shoot himself in the head).
March of the God: B. Not as grand as "Paper Triangle" or "Thunder Whales Picnic"; but still really good. I just can't seem to help imagine a bunch of can-can dancing astronauts when they start chanting "Yes, more light".
My Girl (document version): A. Oh yeah. Much better. Fiction version for slow dancing, document version for crowd moshing.
Sayonara Universe: A+. Ho...ly...shit! the pillows transfer from Beatles/Pixies to Pink Floyd; and it is gooooooood!!! Syd Barrett needs to hear this song.
Gazelle City: A-. A very fun way to end the album.

OVERALL GRADE: A-.

They're back, bitches!!! I'd definetely say that this is their best work since HB. Although I love TYMT, I just have to face facts: My Foot is a winner. Sawao and the rest really worked hard on this album. The extra two months really helped put things in order.

Those who feel the pillows' music has become worthless could just pretend that Yamanaka died in a tragic face-meets-helicopter-blades accident shortly after completing Happy Bivouac (or whichever album marks the start of their supposed decline).

Perhaps one could hypnotize oneself so that whenever they see the words "Penalty Life", they read it as "Please Mr. Lostman", and whenever Walkin' on the Spiral comes on, they hear Angel Fish. 'Course that could lead to some interesting arguments:

Miguel Schmitzel - "Good Dreams is crap!"
Prof. Oongmer - "Whatever, daydream wonder alone makes it worthwhile!"
Miguel Schmitzel - "What?!"

Freaking great album. I'll work on a review of some sort, but it's really good. Nonfiction and The Third Eye were already great, but I was surprised with the pretty much flawless quality of the album. Rock'n'Roll Sinners is, in my opinion, as close as any song on the album gets to being forgettable, and it's still a pretty good song.

March of the God and Gazelle City are two of my favorites at this point. I really like Mighty Lovers, though the chorus takes some getting used to; I was expecting something with a little more of a kick, but it kinda lays back instead. That's cool, it just seems a bit weird for some reason.

Anyway, it's definitely a sweet album. I wouldn't put it in their top five or anything, but I certainly like it more than their past few.

edit: Also, Degeneration is pretty good. My Girl(Document Version) isn't anywhere near as good as (Fiction Version), but it's still alright. The melody is just arranged in a really bland manner, in my opinion.

Agreed. OVER AMP is crazy good. Both of the THR singles should've been on PL. Does anyone think I Know You would've been better if they slowed it down a bit? Not a major slow down, just enough so Sawao doesn't have to burn through the verses...and scream...

Aww... Thanks for the hug GoldenRhino! I'm glad I made a good first impression within my first five posts. :)
