Re: Song Relationships
Stuff like Ripcord and Don't look back in anger have been discussed before, so here are some they may have not. Some have subtle similarities while others are obvious. Some have been confirmed as the inspiration by Yamanaka himself. Sawao is very opened about his inspirations. None of these comparisons are meant to discredit him. If anything, these offer some insight to his song writing process.

(Sawao has mentioned that the That Dog's album "Retreat from the sun" was an inspiration for the album RUNNERS HIGH, as well.)
Liz Phair -White Chocolate Space Egg / Bran-new Love Song -Whip-Smart / Funny Bunny

The Kinks -You Really Got Me / Skinny Blues
Beck -Sexx Laws / Tokyo Bambi (the pillows even covered Sexx Laws during the Penalty Life tour. I wouldn't be surprised if Tokyo Bambi evolved from there.)
The Strokes -Reptilia / Third Eye
Makes for some interesting listening.

Re: Song Relationships
Are all of these you listed confirmed by Sawao in various interviews? if not, which ones are confirmed by Sawao? It'd be really cool to know that Sawao was a Built to Spill fan. And it's really cool to know that he was into That Dog. I gotta give Sawao credit, he really got pretty deep into the 90's alternative rock scene. Not a lot of people talk about That Dog too much.

Re: Song Relationships
I don't really see the Creep and Hybrid Rainbow connection. Is it kind of the basic "form"/skeleton of the chorus?
Radiohead - Let Down Sawao Yamanaka - Birthday I'm pretty sure there's some inspiration there.

That's what I'm guessing, the arpeggiated "quiet" verse with the resounding "loud" distorted chorus is my guess at the connection, otherwise I'm kinda lost.

Built to Spill -Center of the Universe / Happy Bivouac
I remember playing Happy Bivouac some years ago in my mom's car once, and (her having listened Keep it Like a Secret numerous times) she immediately exclaimed, "It's like a Built to Spill ripoff!" --that was the first time that the similarity occurred to me.
I don't know how the band That Dog went under my radar all this time, but I feel they've got a sound I could get into. Thanks for sharing, Mafu!

Re: Song Relationships
A) This thread is now "sick" instead of just "cool."
B) That Dog really does sound great, going to check out some albums.

And it's really cool to know that he was into That Dog. I gotta give Sawao credit, he really got pretty deep into the 90's alternative rock scene. Not a lot of people talk about That Dog too much.
The thing that sucks is that a lot of information isn't so well preserved. A lot of it comes from word of mouth by fans. For example, I attended Sawao's event in Shinjuku last month where he confirmed that Babylon tenshin no uta, Come on ghost, and Ladybird Girl are all inspired by Smash Mouth. Besides my post on the previous page of this thread, there is zero mention of that information elsewhere on the net.
Some of it is pretty safe to assume based on knowing that Sawao is a fan of the artists and the similarities between the songs. Also, the dates of release of a lot of these are within close range; a lot of the "inspirations" being released pretty shortly before the compared songs. Sawao is a fan of The Stone Roses, and based on how similar the songs sound, I would say that those are a pretty safe bet. Whatever/Scarecrow was confirmed during the single release. No Aloha and Sugar Daddy are very likely, since we know Sawao is a fan of The Pixies/Breeders. Also, Sugar Daddy comes off a Hedwig and the Angry Inch tribute album. Sawao has mentioned being a fan of the film. During live performances of Skinny Blues, Sawao sings "you really got me" at the end. Not a big similarity compared to some others (besides that guitar riff), but likely a homage to The Kinks. Sawao is a confirmed fan of Liz Phair. Can't find much in the way of Sawao talking about Built to Spill, but he has played them on his radio show. Wish I had more information or interviews to cite. I'll continue to do some digging.
The Hybrid Rainbow/Creep association is one that I have seen come up several times. I have no real source to cite on that one, so I don't know if Sawao even said that he was inspired by it or not. I have seen Japanese fans post stuff like "Creep was the idea behind Hybrid Rainbow", but I really don't know how accurate that is. We do know that Sawao is a fan of Radiohead, and I guess Creep could have given him a generally idea. I mainly included that one in the list because I was interested to read what others thought about that comparison.
Also, Sawao has mentioned that British rock such as The Stone Roses, The Smiths, and The Cure were inspirations from the 1st movement through Lostman. As for the 2nd movement, according to a HMV interview, Sawao recommended these albums which he was introduced to during that time: Our favorite shop by Style Council, Jumpin Jive by Joe Jackson, First Kiss by Fairground Attraction, Söndag i sängen by Bo Kaspers Orkester. Little Busters continues to take it's inspiration from British rock (One Life/Oasis, for example), but around this time Sawao incorporates more US alternative and US indies influence (such as That Dog). RUNNERS HIGH and Happy Bivouac take most of their inspiration from US alternative and US indies (That Dog, Nirvana, The Pixies, Built to Spill, Liz Phair, etc).

Re: Song Relationships
Been listening through That Dog's work, and it seems like he either consciously or unconsciously drew from a ton of their stuff. My bet is on purpose, he seems pretty open about taking musical ideas he likes for his own songs.
The intro bass hook, soft-loud dynamic, and that little insturmental pause at the end of each chorus in Curly Rudy are pretty obviouslt inspired by "He's Kissing Christian" on Totally Crushed Out.
"Old Timer" and some other songs on their self-titled have aspects that make me think of songs like Come Down, Advice, and Nightmare.
Edit: and I can see the connection with "Creep." More just the overal pacing and feel of the song with the gentle climbing arpeggios on lead and a fuzzy, emotional chorus. But they do both have vibrato octaves on the lead for the bridge/solo on top of that, haha.

Re: Song Relationships
I used to think that Monster C.C. was musically and sort of thematically inspired by Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer", but after hearing That Dog's "Michael Jordan", I would say there's a strong element of that one in the music and structure as well.

Re: Song Relationships
I'm surprised this doesn't seem to have been mentioned: The Third Eye + One Headlight/Whatsername
I remember that Sawao mentioned something about going for a Green Day sound in an interview in 2007, so I'm betting he nicked the chord progression for The Third Eye from Whatsername rather than One Headlight (The Wallflowers). And Green Day no doubt took it from The Wallflowers to begin with.

Re: Song Relationships
If you guys look a page back, I posted A Johnny Thunders song being similar to "Spiky Goose".
Also Orange Juice is another band that remind of early pillows. Poor old soul https://youtu.be/RmpNSpzx2wI seem to be the inspiration to both "stand up and go" and "blue march". Untitled Melody https://youtu.be/-F-vzacK0kI Actually reminds me more of Sawao's " Birthday" but I'm pretty sure undoubtedly the style is something that the pillows would totally borrow.
More British examples:
Squeeze's In Quintessence https://youtu.be/5fSIFHxR1Vw reminds me of both "kimi ga iru" and "Tokyo Bambi"
Primal Scream's "Gentle Tuesday" https://youtu.be/sTsOOdi0F5g chorus reminds me of the chorus to "new year's eve".
American example: Cheap Trick's Surrender https://youtu.be/1v_qm1okshk reminds me of "Xavier".

Re: Song Relationships
I just came about this song from Madonna https://youtu.be/GuJQSAiODqI In the fourth verse of the song, she name checks movie actors and movie actresses from the 1920s - 1950s, and she does it in a rap vocal style.
In Monochrome Lovers there's a rapping part in the middle of the song. However, Sawao name checks movie characters rather than movie actors but I still find interesting how the styles are similar to each other.
