Re: [2014.09.17] About a Rock'n'roll band + 2nd Movement Blu
Figured I'd post this here, lest it get buried, but here's an MP3 of the acoustic Another Morning that Mafu uploaded from the livestream on 916: https://www.sendspace.com/file/1bt6f7 So I got around to watching the rest of the new DVD, and the 1st Movement show was in short, amazing. I'm not even exaggerating in the least, but this was a VERY tight performance by the band, even with Kenji being involved. I can't remember the last time I heard the band playing so cohesively, I don't even remember hearing any flubs, as I did hear a few during the 2nd Movement show. But the band was spot on. Manabe with his solos, Sawao with the vocals, and Kenji did an awesome job grooving on the bass and providing those backup vocals. They sounded very very similar to what we heard on the record so many years ago. Highlights from that show was seeing them play Energy, that really got the crowd going. Ame ni Uteba was a real treat too, and for a split second, Sawao sounded just like how he sung on the album originally. By that, I mean there were a couple notes he sung where it sounded like he was "singing with dumplings in his mouth", to quote him from the 916 DVD. Probably the funniest moment came at the end, right before the second encore. Even with my lack of Japanese translating skills, I picked up on this one quick. Sawao and Kenji had just gotten done joking around (seemingly about Sawao's hair which appeared to be a running gag throughout the show) and then Sawao says into the microphone, "Jun, where are you at anyway?" And from somewhere in the back of the crowd Jun yells, "HERE!" Holy crap, I was dying! Everyone was cracking up in the venue too, it was pretty great. I sincerely hope you all get to see this soon, what an awesome show it was, and I'm so glad it was recorded. Again, I'll try and get MP3 rips up this weekend, but I am working, so we'll see what happens. Hopefully when I get them up we can get some rudimentary translations of what was said during the banter of both shows. There was a lot of it going on and I'm sure it'd shed some light on some questions we've been asking for a while now.
I felt the same way....Jun kept up real well with the old basslines in the 2nd movement show, but having Kenji back in the 1st movement, there was some super intense frisson going on with Ueda's back up vocals. They were just so right, so on point, and so welcome, I feel like that's one thing modern-day pillows tunes miss out on the most. I love vocal harmonies, and the newer stuff just really doesn't have much/intricate background vocals.

Ah well. Jun was great on the 2nd movement stuff, though I will admit he didn't quite get the buzzy bee bass on Naked Shuffle.

I also love harmonies, I'm a sucker for them. that's part of the reason I really like White Incarnation, and certain songs on Moon Gold. Apparently, the back up vocals/harmonies were something Kenji wanted to do. Ever since he left, Sawao rarely includes them, and I can think of a lot of songs that could have benefited from the backups. So it was a really nice treat hearing the pillows in their current sound with the backups really out there. But man, these shows get better and better with each watch. I watched it again while my wife was nursing our newborn son (captive audience somewhat), and she was digging a lot of the music, especially the 1st Movement show. After hearing it a few times she says, "That "Energy" song is really catchy, I'm liking it!" I keep feeling myself get a stupid grin on my face while watching this stuff, it's too good and I hope you all can enjoy it soon. So until you see it, here's the audio rips for both shows, at 320 kbps. If someone can maybe give us an idea of what they're saying during the banter (there's a lot of it), that'd be great. I have a feeling a lot of important things are being said here, especially during MC 3, right before Future. Anyway, enjoy! Oh my god.
It's 2014 and I'm listening to a recent recording of the pillows performing Okujou ni Obotte.
I never thought this day would come.
Where the hell is the tears of joy emoticon when I need it?
Your fucking face when you hear them playin' old gems like Bye Bye Sweet Pain and Daydream Wonder. Don't deny it:

Re: [2014.09.17] About a Rock'n'roll band + 2nd Movement Blu
Holy tits, Kono Mama Koko de and Energy are so fucking good. All of it is just enormous, a treasure. Thank you so much for sharing, again. Kenji's tight-ass bass lines, his backing vocals? Hnnngh. Bliss. Jun tears it up, performing admirably throughout the 2nd movement stuff, too. I'm hella impressed.
It sounds like the band genuinely enjoyed these shows. I wonder if they'll start digging deeper into their discography, playing some of these songs with more frequency.
EDIT: Check that fucking solo for Bokura no Halley Suisei! Has it ever been played so immaculately? This shit sounds so good I can't hardly stand it.

The tone was perfect. But he flubbed a couple of times.

Halfway through the 2nd movement now Never would have thought that at this stage of his career Sawao could be singing this good.

Is there auto-tune up in this bitch? Listen to the 1st Movement tour very closely.
There were a few moments in both shows where I was kinda like: "Whoa, Sawao hit that note perfectly, but... it sounded kind of auto-tuney..." There may have been a little autotune magic going on. I hope not, but it's possible. DON'T RUIN THE ILLUSION FOR ME!

Sawao's voice does some weird shit in this song. Shit that cannot be done naturally, methinks.
