Re: what are you reading?
The virtue of Selfishness by Ayn Rand, it's a good read. Even better than Max Stirner's 'The Ego and Its Own'. You can find it here: http://philo.abhinav.ac.in/Objectivism/ ... shness.pdf.

Yes, sore is "that" (sometimes "this" or "it"), ijou is "further than/beyond/past", and ikun ja nai is "don't go/won't go". It can be phrased many different ways, but basically she's dealing with some kind of bad condition and undergoing tests and procedures that aren't helping, till it gets to be too much and the doctor decides to stop pushing it.
Or maybe he's telling her he's not giving her any stronger meds.
She stays up until Doc says no, I won't go further. Go back! Go back! Go back!

Reading Edgar Rice Burroughs 'Tarzan of the Apes' and I absolutely love the way Burroughs writes. Not super detailed but his vocabulary is very impressing.

'Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage' by Haruki Murakami (Dutch translation). I think it will be in the postbox tomorrow. I am really craving for it.

Re: what are you reading?
Just finished a fun little first novel The Night Gwen Stacy Died by a young female author by the name of Sarah Bruni. It was pretty good and it kept me interested and I recommend it to anyone who wants to fill in their week with a bit of light reading.

Re: what are you reading?
So, I have read Murakami's latest novel. For me, it was too short. Here, I do not mean, it was too short, because it was so good. Rather, I think, the story could have been better developed if there was some more space. It seemed more like one of his short stories, than a stand alone novel. He does not really bring anything new, it is just the Murakami you will also find in his other novels. I found some elements of Norwegian Wood as well as Kafka on the Shore in it, but both books are a better read. Anyone got any recommendations for further reading, in the style of writing of Murakami?

But no, seriously, this is why I stopped reading him a few years back. Same book, different cover. There are slight differences, sure, but the guy won't step even an inch out of his comfort zone. If you've read one, you've read 'em all, in a sense. And while I like some in his oeuvre better than others, they all really, really blend together for me these days. And it's a shame, because when I was young and pretentious, I loved his shit.

Hell, I'm sure I will read Kafka on the Shore again.. it may be my favorite book. For now... I think I will give Kenzaburo Oe a try.

Re: what are you reading?
Referring to a discussion that started in the movie thread... @Lesser_Hamster, I'm halfway through A Princess of Mars. It's all right. I'm not really into the writing style, it's kinda dry. I'm trying to stick it out though. I'm letting go the 'superior earth man' BS as a relic of its time (or is it supposed to be a poke at the attitudes toward Native Americans?).
I also just finished the Mistborn series recently, by Brandon Sanderson. It's no substitute for Jordan or Martin but in terms of world-building and magic and COMPLETING a reasonably epic story in only three novels, that's clearly planned and has callbacks to the first book, it's pretty good. His prose is a bit flat, but I'll take that over Pat Rothfuss, who has beautiful prose but can't tell a story (I must have ranted here about that before... all I'm going to say is Felurian... ugh).

Re: what are you reading?
I finished reading Lords of Chaos which chronicles the Black Metal scene in Norway in the early 90s. I don't listen to or care about black metal at all, so I couldn't really tell you why I decided to read this book, but it ended up keeping my interest. I think the book began well enough, giving the history of the music style and some major bands and events. Of course, it went on to spend a lot of time talking about the ridiculous crimes involved with members of the scene. However, as it continued further, it went astray on a slippery slope of trying to provide shocking things. For example, it lists many crimes committed by youths in the United States or elsewhere, but these are either very nebulously linked to black metal and satanism (which the book spends a great number of pages on)... or not linked at all.
Anyway, now I am reading A History of Reading by Alberto Manguel. Manguel's style is so lovely to read. I can so often relate to his ideas... like this line from his The Library at Night:
Old or new, the only sign I always try to rid my books of (usually with little success) is the price-sticker that malignant booksellers attach to the backs. These evil white scabs rip off with difficulty, leaving leprous wounds and traces of slime to which adhere the dust and fluff of ages, making me wish for a special gummy hell to which the inventor of these stickers would be condemned.
And I thought I was the only one who hated price stickers!
