 fav musicians
i'm going to do guitar, becuase that's what i'm all about
rock: yngwie easily owns all types of rock.
jazz: wes montgomery, or joe pass. both way sick
classical: julian bream or andres segovia. But my favorite composer is bach. js, no less.
Blues: ewwww
so those are my main inspirations as far as composing and technique goes. the pillows are also a big part of my playing, but nowhere near the level of yngwie. and the pillowsy stuff i compose is more jazzy than what the pillows do.
so yeah, i'm interested to hear what sclone has to say, as well as the rest of you.
except kelp.

rock: too many, hard to decide
jazz: Victor Wooten (does he count for jazz?)
classical Isaac Albeniz
blues: Eric Clapton

I'm going to go with guitar too.
Rock: Tom Verlane, Richard Lloyd, Pete Townshend, Joey Santiago, Andy Gill
Blues: Skip James, Gary Davis, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson
Jazz: Django Reinhardt and Tchavolo Schmitt are great. Personally, I don't think guitar has much of a place in jazz though.
Folk etc: Doc Watson, John Fahey, Joseph Spence, Ry Cooder, Leadbelly

why don't i see brian may on the rock lists? brian may rocks my socks.
the best songwritter may have to be jimmy gnecco though. a songwriter counts as a musician.

This is not counting Manabe, of course, right?
Rock: Jimmy Page, John Frusciante (he actually fits in various categories...)
Jazz: Wes Montgomery (thanks, steve)
Blues: SRV
I left out lots. I basically put what first came to mind.

favorite guitarists would have to be.. greg ginn, joey santiago, yoshiaki manabe, and even yngwie for a little inspiration.
listen to the "first four years" recordings of 'jealous again' and 'depression' by black flag, its easy to see why greg ginn is the greatest rock guitarist ever..
