Re: What are you playing?
Oh man, the first three Tomb Raiders were pretty awesome. The first one was excellent, but TR2 was my favorite. TR3 was fun too, but they went really screwy with player expectations and artificially jacked up the difficulty with some pretty unconventional and confusing level designs for the majority of the game. Seriously, "Let's hide the shotgun beneath our shitty foliage texture maps in the first level at the very beginning, and if you take TWO STEPS and slide down the opening slope then TOO BAD, YOU MISSED IT! Enjoy getting butt-annihilated by everything until halfway through Nevada." Speaking of bizarre level layouts, all of the London campaign was an enormous pain in the ass. And I was enjoying the South Pacific levels until Mudubu Gorge... HOLY SHIT, where the fuck am I going in these levels? Don't get me started with Antarctica, you can't... swim in that freezing water... never change clothes afterwards... and expect to survive. Don't get me wrong, I mostly enjoyed TR3, but there is some world-class bullshit sprinkled in to that game that spoils it in terms of replayability.
I agree with you there. TR3 is my least favorite from the classics. There isn't really any area I thoroughly enjoyed. The India levels were somewhat challenging, but not really exciting. Nevada started off good, but then you get bored with all the security stuff. London was soul-crushingly awful (Lud's Gate, probably my least favorite Tomb Raider level). South Pacific was probably the better one. And then you have Antarctica, with Lost City of Tinnos being the poor counterpart of Atlantis in TR1 and Temple of Xian in TR2. I did enjoy the game overall, but it doesn't match the expectations deriving from the first two installments.
The only thing I disliked with TR2 was the whole sunken ship campaign. "lol, I'll just skitch this deep-sea diving vessel to the bottom of the ocean with no oxygen tank, I'm sure I'll find air down there, at the bottom of the ocean. I will say one of my favorite puzzles from TR2 was down there. It was that sweet timed-switch movement puzzle where you had to hurdle the thigh-high obstructions while navigating the mazelike corridors. As soon as that campaign was over, it's nothing but upwards and onwards to glorious Tibet with machine-gun snowmobiles, warrior monks, yetis, giant fucking snowballs everywhere and a building-sized Ice Golem, and then the totally awesome finale back in China. Fuck Yeah TR2!!
TR2 is also my favorite. However, I don't agree with you regarding the sunken ship area. Personally, I thought that was the best part of the game. The atmosphere and sense of isolation in those levels is simply breathtaking. I could play and replay them again and again and they'd still give me the chills each and every time. The rest is pretty much flawless.
With the rampant physiological logic breaks, you'd swear Lara was some kind of alien creature... an alien with such poor bone structure to be capable of breaking her neck from any height beyond an 18 foot fall, yet possessing such powerful leg strength to dunk on Shaq, and an infinitely expanding backpack reminiscent of something out of Tom & Jerry. I know, I know, video game. Where I'm going with this is that with the franchise reboot, I'd like to see them implement something with more emphasis on limited means survival aspects like limited weapon carry. I think a hybrid health system could be a good compromise. Let's say Lara only gets health regeneration to 50%. If you want your full bar back you need some kind of health package to finish the job. Just speculating, but they really need to come strong with their reboot if they want to have any hope competing with Uncharted 3.
From what I've read, the new game will be mostly about survival. That, and I really want back the sense of fear and tension of the old games. No more relaxing background music please! Hopefully the graphics will also live up to the standards of most seventh-gen video games.
Let's see, the rest of the series... played Chronicles, mostly boring. Got about halfway through Last Revelation, never finished it, kinda lost interest. I felt like it was missing some of the spark. No interest in AOD, Anniversary is mostly fun but that T-Rex "boss battle" was REEE-TARDED. I intend to play Legend, and I'm currently playing Underworld. Just thinking about TR2 makes me want to hurry up with Underworld so I can revisit TR2.
Aw man, I love The Last Revelation. It was a breath of fresh air after TR3, and incredibly well done. Apart from the last area with the pyramids, I really, really enjoyed it. I'd strongly suggest you to give it another shot.

Re: What are you playing?
Reading Destructoid's review of Pokemon Black/White almost makes me want to try a Pokemon game. But since I've still got plenty of post-game Dragon Quest VI left and I've barely scratched the surface of Radiant Historia I'll probably pass on it. These should keep me plenty busy on the flight to Japan.

Re: What are you playing?
I've been playing the Tactics Ogre remake for the PSP, and holy shit, it's like a completely different game. I mean, holy hell, they did a good job of making an old Super Famicom game relevant.

The atmosphere and sense of isolation in those levels is simply breathtaking. I could play and replay them again and again and they'd still give me the chills each and every time. The rest is pretty much flawless.
It's not so much the quality of the levels (they are mostly fine) but that I feel like there is a major problem with how they presented it. Considering 40 fathoms is the title of the first underwater level, I'm assuming that's how far down she goes... That's 80 yards. That's almost a football field, which honestly isn't terribly deep compared to the ocean, but it's still nothing to fuck around with. She has no flippers and no oxygen tank. I don't care how confident and improvisational a person can be, nobody would ever do this on a whim as she did. She can't expect the ship to have an abundance of air pockets like it does and she can't expect to find the entrance in a timely fashion. It's suicidal. I know she's practically a superhero, but I expect her to think like a human, not a clairvoyant. Instead of just running from the gunfire straight for the vessel as it departed, she should have found a way to deal with her assailant back on the diving rig, and then find another diving vessel to commandeer. The scenario they presented just isn't reasonable. If there isn't another vessel, just wait for the first one to return. I'm sure she's up for a little door camping if any more thugs come looking for her. That stuff really matters with me. Had she just piloted a diver down there everything would have worked out. From there, the scene is set, and she arrives at the ship. I'd be able to suspend disbelief that there would be enough air supply to build levels around purely because I expect it to resemble a tomb raider level. Don't make me suspend disbelief for two or more elements simultaneously or I won't be a happy camper. That's a situation where shooting something for dramatic effect can hurt believability. Natla's Mines was a pretty stupid level from the first TR. "Cool, a lava filled tunnel. I'll just jump over all these pillars without passing out from the intense heat. Everyone does it! Look, there's mine cart tracks right over there! People come through here all the time!" I will make exceptions for matters like this if there is a high enough HSQ. (Holy Shit Quotient) Example: TR2, Floating Islands level. That huge lava waterfall... WITH A TRAP DOOR IN IT. WITH A POOL OF WATER INSIDE OF IT. You know you did a running swan dive into that shit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywjx6K_W0uA&feature=player_detailpage#t=464s

Oh... Well, honestly, I don't find it as odd as you do. The whole diving thing I mean. There's plenty of weird shit in Tomb Raider to make me ponder about such little (and unimportant) details.

Re: What are you playing?
I'm playing Dragon Age Origins. It's pretty cool so far. Much better than I expected...It just makes my GPU heat up like a sumbitch.

Re: What are you playing?
I was really enjoying Dragon Age last summer, until my stupid cat knocked over my Xbox while it was on and scratched a ring into the disc, rendering it useless. What a shame.
I've finished almost everything in Dragon Quest VI, so I'm going to work on Radiant Historia and do some old-school SNES game using an emulator.

Dragon Age is pretty sweet. It's like Oblivion, but with tactics! =D

I'm kind of butthurt about how EX got nerfed, and the story is a joke, but the core gameplay is improved, several of my favorite characters like Cloud, Squall, Terra, and Cloud of Darkness all got improvments, and new stages/characters is always a good thing. Also I love the music choices this time around, didn't care for all the techno in the first game.

Re: What are you playing?
Picked up Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2: Professional today. (Man, that title's a real mouthful.) Not likely to be released outside Japan.
Pokemon White's pretty good but man, I already think this blows it away. Lots more meat to it, and if the last DQM was any indication, hard as nails, too. You guys who've never played DQM are missing out (the original GBC games are some of my favorite games ever.)

XBOX 360: Prince of Persia with my ladyfriend. Just bought Assassin's Creed (the first) for $4.99.
Deciding on how to spend 800 points still. Thinking about just going with Geometry Wars 2....

Dude, I remember playing Dragon Warrior Monsters and DWM 2: Cobi's Adventure when they came out here in the States. Some of the best RPGs I've ever played. Definitely blew Pokemon out of the water. Joker was pretty good too, but for whatever reason, its predecessors on GBC were just so much better.
