Seconded, both counts.

Same here. I don't think we need it to say "the pillows" on it at all, especially if the design incorporates the pillows' logo in it already.

See? That's much better. On a second thought, however, I'm not sure how much I like the extension from the "u," and to a lesser extent, the extensions from the "n" and "m."

I'm guessing Terra is going to go with whatever the friend draws, anyway.

I offered constructive criticism; I did not express a nonconstructive preference that I will or will not "just have to live with." The extensions look tacky and out of place, unlike the extensions in the original pillows logo. Furthermore, I'm not entirely certain that use of her friend's work precludes the use of the work of others, but I could be wrong.

The origional logo also had the extentions 'tacked on', I used to have the exact font that was used for the logo but lost it about a year ago in a hard drive wipe and never found it again.

Regardless, thanks for the comments but I won't be changing it.

That is not what tacky means. You misread my statement.

I guess I just don't get it then. You can always make your own though, if you have some idea's. :)

Please don't take the criticism so harshly. I think you did a great job (best logo submitted so far), Sheer's just trying to make you see a way to make it even better. the pillows' original logo is interesting: we have a shape, an italicized font, and a few extensions on the letters which "break out" of the logo, if you know what I mean. The "t," "p," and both "l"s.

This may seem like I'm overanalyzing, but I'm getting to the point: The reason it works more than the extensions on the "instant music" logo is because there is differentiation in the extensions. The "t" goes horizontally (and really it's the only one that extends outside the natural boundaries of the letter). The "p" and "l"s are tight together, mediated by the vertical height of the "i" - what's important here is that the "extensions" are simply parts of the letter. We have the stick on the p, and the natural line-ness of the ls.

It's cool you tried to pay homage to the original logo by making extensions on the n, m, and u. The only problem is, none of those extensions are in the natural parts of the letter. The "p" and "l"s on the pillows logo would look fine on paper - they're' using the natural form of the letter to "break out" of the logo. I think Sheer is saying this design is slightly tacky because it takes the design principle of the original logo, and sort of over-applies it in an inappropriate way.

Still, I think it's important to make the connection to the original logo. If you're willing to reconsider, I might try taking off the extensions on the "m" and the "u" and leaving it on the "n" - or any other permutation, to see what works. You've got the shape, color, and font of the original logo, and I think we only need one letter extension to make the full tribute in design.

I know I'm not overthinking this, please give it a shot! Really, we highly appreciate your work.

Post Re: A new logo
GR said it better than I could ever have. It is important to note that I am applying a stricter scrutiny to this particular logo because I think it's the best one, and I think that so is everyone else. It is receiving more pointed criticisms because it is good, not because it is bad. I don't have the talent to make changes myself, but you obviously do, so we would appreciate it if you would at least humor us, if it isn't too much effort. In any event, I have long considered how to incorporate the extensions into the "instant music" logo, but I couldn't think of anything that would match the tastefulness of "the pillows" logo, so it may just be in the best interests of the logo to leave the extensions off altogether. Of course, if you do not wish to make any further changes to the logo, then our objections have no standing.

Then again, as we discussed, we're not even sure what terra's plans are, as she may have already chosen to use her friend's image.

I may use one and reserve the right to save another logo for later. :D I appreciate the efforts nonetheless.

I had similar reservations on the extensions of the lettering as GR stated but didn't want to be too picky. Also, the space between the tops of the letters and the edge of the blue shape would have to be reduced to completely match the style of the pillows logo (there I go, being picky).

If you don't care to make further changes, Spike, please consider emailing me the original file (I'm assuming it's a PSD or something) so I can play with it, I do like the flowers bit.

P.S. I am probably 95% done migrating the site into the new format (forum isn't going to change, btw). I found I have over 300 pages. >.> I just have to finish some behind the scenes stuff and it'll be just about ready to be open for business. :)

To Spike: Providing several variations of your work (thumbnails) is often a neccessary part of working with a client on a design, and doubly so when someone comes to you with their ideas and you have to find ways to incorproate their ideas and wants into the design (without wrecking it, of course). The ideas and works evolve throughout the design/feedback process, sometimes over many revisions until the client feels he gets a quality design/his money's worth. Trust us, we really like the design but want the very best version possible.

GR nailed it with regards to why the extensions in the letterforms don't quite work as well as the original design. I likely would have provided a similar analysis.

Also, I have every intention to produce something as well. Right now I have logo/design work for a student and work for my oldest brother's maintanence business that I need to focus on.
