I've been listening to the same stuff over and over again. My top artists are the pillows, Mega City Four, and The Beatles. Lately I've been listening to the pillows and The Chewinggum Weekend. I listen to a little bit of everything. I listen to rock, pop, hip hop, edm, Broadway, reggae, jazz, country, and r&b. So yeah recommend me new music to listen to. ![]() |

Have you tried the "What are you currently listening to?" thread? It's got tons of recommendations. |
Have you tried the "What are you currently listening to?" thread? I thought people were just posting songs for the heck of it. |

I assume Blank meant to check out the stuff people post there and take it as recommendations, but I think it's fine if you post this thread. Not going to stop anyone from making the forum more active. I'll post some stuff I've been into lately: The Dreadnoughts (folk/punk): This is my favorite band I've discovered in the last year or so. Most folk/punk bands are either Irish/Scottish folk and punk mixed or occasionally stuff like Gogol Bordello that's more Slavic/Eastern European folk mixed with punk. They've got songs that incorporate both styles, but I've never really heard too much polka infused punk. Polka Never Dies is my favorite song by them, but pretty much any song of theirs is good. I'll post a few ones I'm particularly fond of. They also do some more sea shanty-ish songs that aren't punk, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGe9EfLh-ug Polka Never Dies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F29EE49z-TA Cider Road https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o31ZcqBIq4Q Grand Union Hotel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pla7nDYciI4 Old Maui (shanty sort of song) Blackbird Raum (folk/punk): This is another folk/punk band that I've gotten into in the last year, but not as much as the Dreadnoughts. Their lyrics aren't the best; they have a very specific eco-anarchist message they're trying to convey and some of their lyrics are kind of interesting, but I dunno, just doesn't do it for me. Plus, I read an interview with the band and they were talking about how they would steal shit, including accordions, or maybe still stole shit, and it seemed very douche-y and BRO I'M SO ANARCHIST xD STOLE A $1k+ INSTRUMENT. So maybe don't buy their music, but listen to it on youtube or Spotify. Anyway, their music is interesting at the very least. My favorite song from theirs is Witches. I haven't explored much outside of the album that's on so I'll just be linking stuff from that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtkvUpkdWiM Valkyrie Horsewhip Reel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou0w40EtMDA Witches Leningrad (ska/punk): This is a band I found on the subreddit for studying Russian. Рыба/ryba (fish) was the first song I heard from them and it's still one of my favorites. This is another band I have a bit of a reservation about because they (or at least Shnur, the singer) may or may not be homophobic (which I'm not saying just because they're Russian); on one video which, surprisingly, had an English comment on it, someone mentioned the fact that they use a Russian word in a song or an interview or something that's essentially just pederast which Russians use a slur similar to the f-bomb slur in English then someone stepped in and was like "he's not homophobic, he just thinks gays should keep to themselves" which is p. damn homophobic so, take that as you will. The music's good and I think? it's free on their site because I think this is another anarchist band, but not sure on that since most of the shit on them is untranslated and just in Russian. So, once again another one you might not want to buy, but you can check them out on youtube and Spotify. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-CnWwbeetE Рыба/Ryba (Fish); love song about the singer saying he's fished around and caught a lot of girls, but the only fish for him is the person the song is addressed to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y748pXFfy_w Фиаско/Fiasko (I think Fiasco?); not sure the fuck this is about, but the chorus includes the words penis and phallus (or at least as far as I can tell.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiFgwttgblQ Интеграл/Integral - I think this is about some singer and the chorus is something like "I figured out the integral", I only took one semester of Russian so I'm shit at it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96x3EFq2zhM WWW - WWW as in world wide web; song's about their website and is essentially like "I moved and got a new address, it's www leningrad spf . ru" and some other shit making a joke about it being a web address/home address. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp8PmgPW_AI Почём звонят колокола?/Pochyom zvonyat kolokola? (Had to use google translate for it, but it's something like for whom does your bell toll) and it's called Москва/Moskva (Moscow) on the album, I think. If I remember the translation, it's a song that's talking about how everyone else in Russia wishes for Moscow to burn down with everyone in it, including Putin and Pussy Riot and blahblah. Charan Po Rantan (folk/pop?): Two Japanese sisters that usually have a backing band with them. One sings and one plays the accordion. I found them sometime over the summer. Really like them and plan on searching for their stuff next time I get a chance to head over to Book Off. Favorite song by them is Watashi No Uchuu. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jC7QfDFp7OE Watashi No Uchuu (My Space [but not the website]) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyxxhfYZks8 Furansu Kabure (France Rash/Cabaret? Not sure if it's meant to be a pun or not.) https://youtu.be/M1lJkbdqOOE Hava Nagila; this is actually done by their backing band along with the accordion playing sister. https://youtu.be/WdRBFOyqYYc I Want You To Be My Baby; kind of an inverse of this, this is actually a completely different backing band along with another singer but with the singer from Charan Po Rantan joining in and doing a Japanese language version of this song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k43qTcMLdA Moon River Barcelona Gipsy Klezmer Orchestra (Folk/World): I just found this band yesterday, but I'm really liking them. They do various folk songs from mostly Klezmer and Gypsy musical traditions, as the name suggests, in a variety of languages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TFvlvbl-30 Lulle Lulle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23dW3H9yFSU Djelem Djelem; this is actually supposed to be the theme song for the Romani/Gypsy (Gypsy actually being a slur) people. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zf_yRFeW5I8 Cigani Ljubiat Pesnji Howlin' Wolf (blues): One of the most famous blues musicians. Been getting back into playing guitar and have been focusing on blues so I've been listening to some of the older greats. I don't think he plays guitar but a lot of the songs he's recorded are blues standards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09j6vMdKi3E Smokestack Lightning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0aIjyX7vwI Spoonful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGIE28q3fEA Killing Floor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ2UadHc_Qg 300 Pounds of Joy If you like any of these, lemme know and I can suggest some more. |

Amongst edm, what are you into? I was rather blown away by the album Worlds by Porter Robinson. Gave it a listen with low expectations, was super impressed. It kind of feels like a mixture of Passion Pit and a few other artists in terms of the tones of the synths, but the songwriting and spread of styles across the album feels really unique to me...at least, among edm albums I've ever heard (which is relatively few, though this album has convinced me to start looking at changing that). Just give a few tracks of his a listen and see about giving Worlds a listen if you like what you're hearing. The scope of the thought put into the narrative of the album, the visuals used at his shows, and whatnot is really impressive. To me, it feels like an album that's really trying to say something. Rock-wise, Kevin Devine is writing some of the best. goddamn. lyrics. that I've heard in some time. That first one in particular, man: "so I don't see it like it's 'us and them' I just see everybody working for that same eternal weekend we drone on and on and on and don't get close to what we wanted heavy legs two steps behind some forever-dangling carrot well I'm so, so tired of it and who's to say that we can't just fucking change it? ![]() they want you to whistle while you work they want you to whistle while you work your life away what do you say, what do you say, what do we say? well I know it seems dramatic, but I treat it like a crisis from the cradle to the coffin, all our time and talent wasted and that weight around your throat, is that a noose dressed like a necklace? 'cause from here I really couldn't tell the difference well, either way, I say let's not take no more chances" |
snip
I liked that Watashi no Uchuu song. I honestly don't know why I like it maybe it has to do with the melody perhaps?
Amongst edm, what are you into?i
Well by edm, I mean't the soundtracks to the video games I grew up with. Not "real" edm I'm afraid, though I will post some examples. The electronic scene has come a long way and definitely has stuff that you could get into. |
