Post Mass of the Fermenting Dregs
Do we really not have a thread about them yet? I was searching for a place to link the new PV, but nothing came up. Go figure.

I'm not sure how you'd classify this band, but I think they have a pretty cool sound which, for me, is defined best by the driving bass lines and high-intensity vocals. And I know some won't like the comparison drawn, but I think their guitarist is a worthy inheritor to the Number Girl legacy.

Anyway, discuss! I know there are other fans here.

Cool song & pv. Also, I'm really glad the guitar chick invested in a hair straightener.

edit: I've heard a few people compare this band to Number Girl, actually. I know someone over at Keikaku did.

they sound exactly like Number Girl because that's what they're going for (they've even been produced by Dave Fridmann and Nakao Kentarou, the bassist of NG), only not as good. They have the shredding guitar, reverbed vox, and distorted bass, but it's kinda hard for any band to match Mukai's eccentricity and Inazawa's drumming.
They're still a decent band, just hyped as fuck as the next Number Girl and that kinda ruined it for me because my expectations were too high upon my first listen.

I see it the other way around. Mukai's genius can't be denied, but with it I often found excess in his work, particularly in some Number Girl. I find MTFG to be a more focused, effective evolution of the style. And I realize that statement is going to ruffle some NG fans' feathers, but I stand by it. Furthermore, one difference you might add is that with the exception of a few songs such as 透明少女 and Tombo the Electric Bloodred, Number Girl is less hard-driving and more lumbering than Mass of the Fermenting Dregs, who seem to have a more energetic sound.

I've heard of them in passing, but this is my first time listening to them. Good stuff here I gotta say. I've just seriously started listening to Number Girl a few weeks ago, and I do see the comparison's between the two. What's the translation for this song's title, and which album do you recommend I should start with now?

As far as I know, they've only release two mini-albums. So, I'd grab them both; they're both pretty great.

Best translation I've got is "Seductive Beat," but Mare or someone might interpret hikizuru differently. A literal translation would be something like "beat which pulls along/seduces."

yeah Number Girl's bag of tricks were a lot deeper than MOTFD's will ever be. It seems they're going to stick to the driving heavy guitar rock for a long time. They've already been together for 8 years and only have what, 15 songs? so it doesn't look like they'll be changing their sound. I feel like saying MOTFD>NG::Oasis>Beatles. I know neither of the bands are anywhere near as important as Oasis or the Beatles, but they're taking one facet of Number Girl's sound and wringing it for all it's worth. Again, not saying they're a bad band, just nowhere near as interesting and varied as Number Girl. I doubt MOTFD would be able to tackle as many genres (ex. reggae and dub, hip hop) as they did and pull it off smoothly.

I'd argue Number Girl in fact failed at this. Sure, Mukai is great and experimental, but that's also his weakness. And it continues to today, ruining otherwise-good songs like "I Don't Want To be With You" with random bullshit. You ask me, the Dregs took the best part of Number Girl, gave it their own flavor, and ran with it, leaving the flab behind.

But Number Girl comparisons aside, I liked this single initially, and it has only grown on me since then.

ehhh, I don't believe there's one song that Number Girl made that's as long and boring as I Don't Wanna Be With You(i.e. repetitive keyboard riff and some casio samples thrown in). It's true when Mukai is left to his own devices, he kinda goes on his own weird boring tangents, but he was never allowed that type of freedom in Number Girl.
I'll stop now, I don't want to sap all the fun out of the thread.

MOTFD isn't as good as Number Girl but they take one of the things NG did best and put a nice spin on it. I saw them play Hikizuru Beat at the concert in Osaka two months ago (with Rin Toshite Shigure) and it was great.

I was introduced to this band, ironically, by someone that doesn't listen to japanese rock. I loved them immediately. I've never listened to Number Girl before, but now that people are making comparisons I'm gonna give those a listen, too.

MOTFD's a great band, my favorite track is ハイライト, yours?

That must have been some show.

I really like Kono Speed no Saki e, but Hikizuru Beat is up there now, too.
