Tony Bennett. That's all that needs to be said.

Eric Clapton is the king of rock-type blues. :)

From my experience, mostly none of them are any good.

So true. Cream, one of the bands Clapton was in a long time ago, has a ton of blues covers, and original blues tracks. Also, B.B. King is really good.

As for jazz, I enjoy Japanese jazz fusion bands like Casiopea and T-Square (aka The Square in some cases :P)

John Lee Hooker, or alternatively go to Kingston Mines in Chicago and listen to people play.

You want just jazz singers? Sorry I couldn't help you with that.

If you want .... I dunno.... 'real' jazz, whatever that means...

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

That should get you started.

Other famous jazzers to consider: Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Count Basie... I mean... the list goes on forever.

Miles Davis is enjoyable stuff when you're in the mood for it.

If you're interested in hearing good blues Chicago in general is great for it. Kingston Mines is great and there's also Buddy Guy's Legends in the loop. (you should also check out Buddy Guy) I've been to Kingston Mines but only was in Buddy Guy's Legends to fill out an application, but they had a blues guitarist there playing in the middle of the day on a Tuesday which means you could probably always find someone playing there.
