They're my new favorite non-pillows band.

And I've been called many names for it.

How do you guys feel about them?

Let's just say I would be one of those people calling you names and leave it at that.

I feel like they have some darn good songs, and Viva la Vida is probably one of the best things I've ever heard by them, that song is just fantastic.

Yeah, I have a feeling that anyone who trashes Viva la Vida is just doing it to try to look cool.
Seriously, can anyone honestly deny how awesome this is? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3mYc1m3lsM
Same goes for the full music video.

That said, I don't listen to Coldplay at all. Rather listen to U2.
But yeah, that track is dope.

I've been a fan since their "A Rush of Blood to the Head" album. I know they are kind of a clone copy of a U2/Radiohead hybrid, but all of that gets pushed away when you hear how good they are.

BTW: Anyone figure out the meaning of the song title "42"? If you separate the numbers and say it in Japanese, it's said "shi-ni," which means to die. (I know that there are people who say that 42 is the number of life, but since the song deals more with death than life I'm sticking with my guess.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitchh ... The_Galaxy
42 is the meaning of Life, The Universe, and Everything

I always thought they liked The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, since they have two songs whose titles are the same as two elements of the book (Don't Panic and 42)

Viva La Vida is a pretty good album, and I like scattered songs from their prior works. I've never found them to be anywhere near as great as their proponents think, nor anywhere near as awful as their haters believe. They're a decent band that suffers from too much hype.

I agree with Mare and Rhino. People trash them because everyone else does. They're a great band imo.

A lot of their songs have a deep emotional feel to them, the band members really know how to tap into your soul.

I don't know why other people trash them, but I trash them because I think they suck. And their vocalist surpasses even Thom Yorke on the scale of annoyingness.

Trashing Coldplay is the new hip thing to do, and it's really undeserved. The hype they get, while sometimes excessive, is justified for the most part. They just get lots of extra praise from things like their partnership with Apple.

But Coldplay is one of my favorite groups. I've been a fan of them since A Rush of Blood to the Head. I think Chris Martin's vocals are a large part of why I like them so much. His vocal range allows for a huge amount of emotion to come through in their music. I love that kind of powerful, soaring style of music that they play.

That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm trying to say that they are worthy of praise for their music, but at the same time, I can see where someone could get the idea that they are overhyped. I just don't see too many people give much reason for not liking them other than it's "pansy music" or whatever. Obviously, you have reasons, and that's good.
What? Do people really say, "Look at this band's affiliation with corporation XYZ. Their music must be great.
Yes, they do. That's the same reason they have celebrities endorse everything from breakfast cereal to underwear. Coldplay gets some extra attention and support from corparate sponsorships like their partnership with Apple.
Or it requires him to annoyingly switch from baritone to an annoying falsetto.
Just an opinion, like the one you took apart in my first statement. You're seeing everything in black and white here.

Therefore, trashing Coldplay is not necessarily undeserved, as opposed to your previous statement that it is. Other than that, sure - there are valid reasons both to like and dislike them. Agreed? Good.

What? Do people really say, "Look at this band's affiliation with corporation XYZ. Their music must be great.
Actually, celebrities endorse corporations because the corporations pay them to do so. Corporations pay celebrities to endorse them because of the extra attention and support they receive from the endorsement. You have it the wrong way around. Roger Federer doesn't endorse Wilson racquets because the endorsement gets him more fans and helps him play tennis better. He endorses them because they pay him with top-of-the-line, customized racquets, as well as millions of dollars. If anything, endorsements hurt celebrities, because they are perceived as "selling out."

Yes...that was an opinion, and a joke - not an argument. However, from an objective standpoint, he doesn't have an impressive vocal range - but if you prefer the limited range that he does have, then that is a valid opinion.
