Peoples' taste in music seems to vary quite a bit on this board, so I?m wondering how many of you listen to the blues. How long have you been listening? Who are your favorite artists? Do you have a favorite style? Does anyone play the blues? I tend to like delta, post war electric, and Texas blues. Muddy Water, Little Walter, and John Lee Hooker are probably my favorite artists, but lately I find myself listening to a lot of Magic Sam, Eddie Kirkland, Jr. Kimbrough, Son House, and Mississippi John Hurt. I'm also starting to rediscover Hubert Sumlin as a solo artist. In terms of white bluesmen, I love Paul Butterfield and John Mayall. I'm interested in hearing what people here listen to, and possibly learning about some new artists. |

The older guitarists around here (the guys who work at the music store, give lessons) are all big blues guys, so I was kinda rooted in that type of music. I'm sure you listen to a lot more of it than I do, though. I bounce around in genres, but alternative rock is my true love. I do like Muddy Waters, SRV, Clapton, and a bunch of other guys. I can't remember all of their names.

I can't believe some of the stuff he plays. If you like Clapton you should really check out John Mayall. They recorded an album together, which is one of my favorite blues records. Mayall also does amazing harmonica solos. |

Blues = great. I think I mentioned this in another thread, but my some favorite blues musicians are Gary Davis, Skip James, Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins and Little Walter. I also play blues guitar, I am very proud of the fact that I own a Gibson J-200 like the one Gary Davis used. |

I like the blues a lot, but I don't know any artists specifically. I'm familiar in passing with John Lee Hooker, SRV, Clapton, etc. Mostly I listen when a local station plays Friday night blues. |

Wolf. All about Howlin' Wolf. Just bought the Chess collection and found myself trying to sing like him on every track. I'm not to keen on any blues(or at least what claims to be blues) from the late 60's onwards. Except SRV. I love his version of Little Wing. |

While I'm definitely inclined to agree that bands like the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin were massively overrated and not that talented, there are plenty of good artists who recorded into, and past the sixties. Between Michael Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop Paul Butterfield was able to lead an amazing blues band. Luther Allison didn't start recording until the late sixties, and even Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf had some good records left in them by that time. Post-war Chicago and Delta are personal favorites, but there's a lot of good blues to be discovered past that time period. I've mentioned this guy a lot, but Magic Sam blows me away. He recorded in the 50's and 60's, before he died at a young age. Before him I really didn?t like west-side blues (I prefer a harmonica to a horn section), but he is so addictive I can't stop listening to him. |
