I've always wanted to try some stuff by The Magnetic Fields, The Microphones, Tullycraft, Jets to Brazil, Blonde Redhead, Of Montreal, and Xiu Xiu. NMH were good, likewise with Bell & Sebastian. The Arcade Fire, Deerhoof, The Notwist, Sufjan Stevens, and The Shins never did much for me, and Wilco has tapered off into his own popular obscurity as far as I'm concerned, but I don't know much about the rest.
I've had a hard time finding obscure music ever since soulseek was somehow vanquished by my college network. Curse you, anonymous internet monkey ninjas. Curse you.

Hooray wimpy indie shit. Though I am fond of some of those groups.
Ever get the feeling that half of listening to music these days is an obscurist competition?

Sometimes it does seem that way, though I personally don't go for indie or obscure groups so much as I follow up on recommendations and try to find stuff that I like. Popularity doesn't really matter to me.

I like a few North American indie bands/artists, like Broken Social Scene, Sufjan Stevens, and The Wrens, but most North American indie artists bore me.
That's why I like Japanese indie rock. Less pretentiousness, more rock. And in many cases, much more innovation.

you're probably missing out on some really good bands, though. Although I can say that indie rock is usually not indie and half of the time not that rockin'.

Well, I listen to North American indie stuff, I just don't like a ton of it. As a general rule, I like stuff with interesting/innovative musicianship, so if there are any bands that fit that bill, I'd be glad to give a listen.
