intro to japanese music
I just made a mix cd of japanese music to give to a friend in the hopes of sparking her interest in what I've been listening to for the past 3 years; since no one understands why I listen to it in the first place. But I chose one song from a bunch of bands, which was pretty hard especially for the bands that I'm really into, ie. Pillows, GO!GO!7188, The Back Horn, etc. So I ended up figuring that I should put either singles, or songs that first got me into each of these bands, just for the sake of putting something on there that will get a new listener interested.
So anyhow here's what I ended up putting on it:
bugy craxone - im sorry
beat crusaders - windom
guitar wolf - jet generation
sambo master - sayonara baby
noodles - ivy
the back horn - tabibito
the pillows - crazy sunshine
judy and mary - daydream
ellegarden - no.13
balzac - day the earth caught fire
kenzi & the trips - bravo johnny
asian kung-fu generation - loop & loop
husking bee - umi no gen
going underground - sentiment express
the pees - gia
blankey jet city - fuyu no sweater
sparta locals - tokyo ballerina
cune - refrain
gogo!7188 - c7
shiina ringo - honnou
thee michelle gun elephant - killer beach
polysics - hot stuff
But for the sake of making a topic out of this, what songs/bands would you put onto a cd to get someone else interested in Japanese music?

Doping Panda, Hi-Standard, Zazen Boys, Number Girl...
My list would go on for 3 disks.
And Swanky Street.

Looks like a good line up of songs.
All of my friends think that I know Japanese. Nobody ever understands why I listen to them. I sent a link to one of my brother's friends where I had the No Self-Control PV playing. After she saw it, she was asking who it was. The best part was where she said that she whats to understand why the singer is singing about. Of course, this was coming from a 12 year old who, at the time (and may possibly still be) into Green Day's American Idiot and just about every single band that KROQ (LA radio station that plays music from all the latest rock artists) and MTV have shoved in our ears.

You should have picked a noodles song that has vocals, like Hush Bell or She, Her.

I actually did make a mix CD for a friend recently, but I limited my selection to a handful of bands. So there's a fair number of PENPALS and Pillows songs on there and a mix of single songs by others. If anyone yells at me about my selections, uh...well, I just don't care.
1. A New Day - Young Punch 2. Rocksteady - Straightener 3. Carnival - The Pillows 4. 70 Times - PENPALS 5. Message to You - Highway61 6. Cream Soda - SUPERCAR 7. Rainbow - Noodles 8. (I've Been Waiting so Long) In my Bed - PENPALS 9. Killer Tune - Straightener 10. Sandaagaaru - Go!Go!7188 11. Power to Live - Highway 61 12. Loop & Loop - Asian Kung-Fu Generation 13. Turbo 51 - Young Punch 14. Kono yo no Hate Made - The Pillows 15. Prop Shot - PENPALS 16. Mirror, Girl & Sun - Noodles 17. Kiseki no Gai (Miracle Street) - Straightener 18. South California - PENPALS 19. Shiroi Natsu to Midori no Jitensha, Akai Kami to Kuroi GITAA - The Pillows 20. Fun's Better, Isn't It? - Young Punch 21. Fool on the Planet - The Pillows 22. Tell me Why - PENPALS
