Re: Number Girl
So I've been reading the long, meandering autobiography of Tim Rogers (an infamous, verbose game journalist and creator of ZiGGURAT) and he frequently mentions Number Girl during his account of moving to Japan in 2001, and apparently saw them live at least once or twice. I'm rather jealous, and I didn't think anyone outside of Japanese was really familiar with the band until a few years after their breakup, but he likes NG and a lot of other good Japanese bands (Ging Nang Boyz, Sambomaster, Zazen, Ling Tosite Sigure, etc.)
Speaking of NG, Sappukei and U-REI are such a killer duo of tracks. That's an album I'll never get tired of.

What a lucky guy.
Yeah man, it was overcast, rainy, and raw here for the last couple of days. Perfect Sappukei weather if you ask me.

Re: Number Girl
I spent most of last night cleaning up my external HD, deleted 20k some odd files off it, and stumbled upon a folder of old DLs including a few NG albums which could only have come from someone here. I'll have to listen through them, I'm sure there is a reason they were forgotten Hopefully I find a couple of gems though, any suggestions?

Re: Number Girl
any suggestions?
I've been listening to these NG songs recently and highly recommend them. If you don't like them you're a bad person.

They're one of my favorite bands these days.

Re: Number Girl
I hated them the first time I heard them. Then one day something clicked. Now they are probably my favorite band.

Re: Number Girl
I didn't like Number Girl that much at first, either. It took a few months to get into them. Now I consider all four of their albums absolute essentials for anyone who likes high-velocity indie rock.
Some of my favorite songs are Space Girl, Tuesday Girl, Manga Sick, Seiteki Shoujo, and Drunk Afternoon, but NG has a huge number of awesome songs, it's hard to pick just a few.

Re: Number Girl
Num-Heavymetallic is a masterpiece. SGDA is the runner-up for me. Sappukei is great and SGBB features a handful of songs I enjoy. The live album is killer, too.
Really digging Trampoline Girl and U-Rei lately. It seems like every time I explore one of their albums I come away with one or two new songs I love. It's kind of weird. What once sounded like noise is actually really inspired and technical music. And unlike so many other bands, their music really gets to me emotionally. I don't know why.

Re: Number Girl
I hated every Number Girl song except Toumei Shoujo when I first started listening to them. This band seems to be borderline noise pollution to untrained ears.

Re: Number Girl
I think the reason I didn't like NG at first was because I expected them to have a similar melodic sensibility to The Pillows. NG is much more rhythm-driven and has a darker, sparser sort of melody from SGDA onward. Approaching the music with the right expectations is the key to enjoying lots of stuff, I've noticed.
I have the Omoide 2 CDs as well and honestly Series 1 Disc 4 is the only one of those I ever listen to from start to finish; the others just have scattered songs I listen to every once in a while. Shibuya Rocktransformed remains their defining live album for me (well, the Kyoto University show from the self-titled DVD is really close.) The Omoide 2 bonus DVDs are super nice, though. I like that performance of I Don't Know where the camera shakes violently as Mukai screams.

I am always in the mood for Sentimental Girl's Violent Joke. It's the perfect rock song, I swear.

Re: Number Girl
I'm pretty new to this forum, but I must say, all NG albums are MUST HAVES. My favorite is "School Distortional Addict".
