Re: Pickups
Yes, I've heard they really suck when it comes to clean channel. I think it has to do with the fact that it has a high D.C. Resistance, but a low output. Quite the abnormality, wouldn't you say?

Re: Pickups
What about the SH-6?
Supposedly, it's hotter than the SH-5 and has less bass and more mid. I've never tried it, but it sounds pretty close to what I want.
BTW, does Sawao use SH-1's in his cyclone?

Re: Pickups
This thread is about trucks, right? I like the Toyota Tacoma. Ford's F-series trucks are just too big and impractical.

Re: Pickups
I swapped the stock pickup in my Jagmaster with a Dimarzio Super Distortion. It depends a lot on what style your going for, but it sounds realllly good for what I play (hardcore punk/ska). It's really, really hot. I'm sure it'd sound amazing for shredding, if I wasn't running it through a hod rod deluxe. It sounds amazing distorted, it's really powerful, but at the same time sounds clear enough to hear all the notes in a chord. The clean surprisingly wasn't as bad as I thought it would be; I wouldn't use it for something like jazz or folk, but it gets the job done for everything else. I'm thinkin I'm gonna swap the neck pickup out now, but I don't know what I'm gonna put in there yet

Re: Pickups
EDIT: I need better glasses.
I'm surprised you put the Super Distortion in the neck though, I'd imagine it'd be kinda wooly there. Anyways I'd think maybe a JB would be a good pick for the bridge, I'd imagine that Manabe might've modded his Jagmaster with one (then again he also has that Orange Amp, that thing can make anything sound like sex).

Re: Pickups
oh shit, did I say neck? No, I replaced the bridge. My mistake. Although I hear they don't sound all the bad in the neck position, either.

Re: Pickups
Ah ok then. In that case maybe go with a Seymour Duncan '59 in the neck, great cleans and will get a nice PAF sound for soloing or maybe a Pearly Gates for something a bit more raunchier. Plus for Hardcore Punk and Ska stuff I feel that the pups Dimarzio has for neck humbuckers probably wouldn't be best suited for that since they tend to be geared towards being a bit more articulate for shred-styles and then a mess of PAFs of all sorts. What I think an even niftier idea would be to do though is I would probably get a Seymour Duncan Phat Cat and put that in the neck since it's a p90 in a humbucker casing, this way it's something a bit different (and p90's are very punk friendly and just all-around awesome in general).

Re: Pickups
I'm putting a light blue lace sensor in the neck of my strat and a SD '59 in the bridge.
That's after I replace these darn tuning keys...

Re: Pickups
Ok, now I know I'm definitely getting a strat HSS. The pickup swap is either going to be Seymour Duncan JB or Seymour Duncan SD-5 in the bridge. If anyone owns these any of these two pickups, I would highly appreciate feedback!

Question: It was you that tried the Mustang out, right? Weren't you disappointed in its weak pickups? So why are you considering to use a Seymour Duncan JB on an HSS Strat? Did you ever consider putting a JB in the Mustang like Manabe?

Indeed; I did purchase and return the mustang, but not just because of its pickups, because of its potential.
You said yourself on another thread that making a mustang sound like manabe is almost impossible without the right equipment. Besides, Manabe was great even without the pickup swap! He only changed it recently (2005 I believe). In fact, and correct me if I am wrong, he recorded sono mirai wa ima with single coils.
Also, which lace sensor would be best for neck: blue or gold or just leave the texmex?

Re: Pickups
It depend what you want...I'm in the same boat as you. I had a friend that works at a music shop test the impedence of the stock single coil. (I have an HSS too). It came out at like 6.6? I believe.
The gold is a lot less than that and the Blue is a lot more. That's why I was going for silver or light blue,. The silver ius basically going to be a louder version of the stock with less noise. I like the stock neck sound, so I might go for that. The light blue will give off a completely different voicing. I like it.
I'm still undecided.
The stock HB is nice too, before you swap it out, play around for a week or so when you get it. It's not too bad at all.

Re: Pickups
Yeah, I did play around with it and I have to say that it came very close. In fact, I think it is very useful but I would be a little happier with the sh-4 or sh-5.
As for the lace sensors, I'm still not even sure if I really want one yet. I think the stock ones are pretty nice.
By the way, what color is your strat?

Re: Pickups
Sunburst. <3
Yeah, the stock neck pick up IS nice. But it is a SC. It is naturally noisy. Especially when I go muff/comp for Gilmour like leads. Lace ensors get rid of that noise...since I like the stock one, that's why i was thinking the LS Silver, it's basically the same thing, without the noise. The light blue is also nice, but as I said, it has a different voicing. A look on youtube and google will yield clips of any of the LS you want to hear.
What are the SH-4 and SH-5? The SH-4 is the JB iirc? What is the SH-5, Custom 5?
I was thinking of putting a JB uin the bridge, Manabe's tone is of course very nice. But I wonder if it'd be too hot...the '59 seems like the best SD for all around versitality. I'ma keep looking though. The SC's are no question...LS's are some of the only ones that cancel the hum completely. HB's I have more leeway with and might look beyond SD. Lace Music might make a nice HB or some other lesser known brand.
Like I said, the stock HB is ok for now though, so I'll just focus on the neck for now.
Maybe after everything else I want done is through, I'll replace the mid pup, but I really don't use it that much. THat's why I want to switch the mid tone control to the bridge. Might put in push/pull pots formore variety like bridge+neck or bridge+mid+neck, or even just to put them out of phase. I have to look into which would be most useful.
