i can't speak for all your parameters, but blankey jet city comes to mind. solid rock, interesting vocals (took me a while to even like the vocals).

Actually, might I suggest Mr. World by THE BACK HORN? I'm pretty sure that that would work. Even if it doesn't, it's a great song. Possibly my favorite by the band.

Ohohoho…what an interesting artifact Ashinow has dug up indeed. (GR, I hope you don't mind me butting into your thread.)
I happen to also know this Dalton guy in real life. In fact, I play drums for his current band (not the now-defunct Margaritas—they had a different drummer). I don't know how GR's particular endeavor turned out, but in general, I think it's safe to say that he doesn't think of Japanese rock as just a novelty anymore.
Specifically, I've noticed that he's pretty impressed with "Japanese guitarists". As in, whenever Japanese rock is mentioned in a conversation, it's usually the first thing he brings up. Now, when he says "Japanese guitarists", I'm guessing that he's mainly referring to the ones who play for the more well-known (i.e. Visual Kei) bands; in other words, guitarists who play with a highly melodic soloing style, largely influenced by metal shredding. Nevertheless, he thinks they do some really musically awesome stuff (and he's not a metal fan at all).
Also, I've shown him several pillows songs over the years (sampled from all three "eras", but mostly from the Kashima jazz-influenced era), and I'm pretty sure he considers them musically "legit". He thought Manabe's active lead guitar style was interesting (if I recall correctly, he described it as "non-intrusive soloing").
As for songs that "rock", so to speak, I think something along the lines of The Pees' Zensokuryoku de Toomawashi might cater to his tastes, although I don't know if he'd care for the vocalist…

Goddamn man, talk about a resurrection. And a valuable resurrection too! Haha, I'm surprised you found this post.
And agreed about that Pees song. It's a fucking shame, The Pees. Great jams (well, mainly that song), but a shit-awful vocalist.

your fighting a losing battle, he's constructed such harsh standards that he's forcing you to pander to them in order for him to consider your taste on par with his own.
I say fuck im, he has a naive taste and trying to funnel music into his narrow constraints is just a disservice to yourself.
pardon me, but I've run into too many people with the same shitty taste in music as your friend and would encourage people not to encourage their narrow perspective on the art of musical expression.

So this is completely unrelated and really late to the game, but thanks to GR I spent about two hours listning to Sambomaster albums on YouTube. I had only ever heard one of thier songs before, but damn, and thier live videos? The lead singer/guitarist makes me laugh my ass off, that's a guy whose just up there having fun.
