Appetite for Destruction is the best fucking album to come out of the 80's.

As for me, my foobar playlist currently playing consists of Bugy Caxone, Spaghetti Vabune! and Cibo Matto.

Heh. I'd say Synchronicity or The Joshua Tree, and a lot of snotty critics would vote for Daydream Nation. There's a lot of eighties stuff I haven't heard yet.

no, the vaselines killed nirvana a little because i never knew that kurt didn't write son of a gun. also, i don't like the vaselines because they're pretentious in that velvet underground way... :)

EDITED BECAUSE I ALWAYS KNEW THAT MOLLY'S LIPS WAS A VASELINES SONG, I HAD A BRAIN FART SORRY =[

I would agree with The Joshua Tree, if we weren't talking about G'nR too.
But an easy way to clear this up is breaking it down to genres so that everyone wins!

So what genre does U2 fall under?

I would consider U2 to be post-punk. At least the earlier stuff.

Genres are kind of ridiculous. Any one band could be classified under at least 20 different genres, probably none of which could accurately describe it.

Some of my least favorite genre titles:

Alternative Rock - I don't like this one because nobody ever really knows what it is. What is alternative rock anyway? It seems that...pretty much all rock is alternative rock, which contradicts the "alternative" nature of the genre. What the hell?

Christian Rock - What kind of rock is it? God knows. All we get is a subtle glimpse at what the lyrical content is about. Since when should a musical genre be classified by lyrical content alone?

Indie - This is certainly the least descriptive of all genres. Anyone who actively seeks music from this genre is probably retarded, as there are no distinctive characteristics of it, other than the fact that the band that plays it is not signed to a major record label. Oh wow, that's...pretty much everyone. Oh, but don't be fooled - the bands can still be signed to "independent" labels, many of which are as influential as the big four major record labels.

In Hell I bet they listen to Christian Rock.
Not a big fan of Alternative and I dunno what would be considered Indie.

spot on!

as for indie, it's a buzzword for cool. indie is a very mainstream and processed sound, in my mind. in rasputin, the biggest record store in berkeley, i was very happy to see them make the distinction between indie, the sound, and indies, the bands who are on independent labels. most kids think that indie rock bands are actually on independant labels =P

then again even independant labels almost don't exist anymore... ugh.

and yeah no one knows what alternative is...

Heh, I just found that yesterday. It's pretty nice. I downloaded some Bloodthirsty Butchers (Birdy and Banging the Drum), but I haven't listened to it yet.

Oh come one. Christian rock is just a bunch of bible thumpers trying to sound like mainstream rock so they can rope you in, but in turn just end up sounding worse than the shitty music they're emulating.

Right now, I'm listening to the Band of Gypsys.
