Pedals don't play a big part in Mukai's sound. A Telecaster on the middle pickup position into a Vox AC30 (preferably Top Boost) will get you 99% there.
This. Also, you guys gotta hear the tone on my Telecaster's middle position. I botched the wiring when I installed my bridge pickup, so now the middle position sounds TOTALLY nasal, out of phase, whatever the hell. It's kinda funny. TYMT says I should keep it the way it is cause it's so unique. Instead of "Mukai" I get "squownk squownk squownk"
I've wired my LP for phase switching - and it's really cool to have that nasal tone at your disposal...but I think I would be really disappointed if I couldn't switch out of it, unless you just stick to lead work, but even then...
It's a setting that I'm eternally grateful for, but that I rarely use.

Re: Number Girl
What do you guys mean by phase switching? Is it practical?

Re: Number Girl
My Tele's middle actually DOES sound a little like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEJVn3CcaGwJust a bit harsher, and less "I meant to do this." It's actually sort of an embarrassing clusterfuck. My neck pickup is the stock MIM tele pickup, sounds fine. Middle position is out of phase nasal. Bridge position is SEYMOUR DUNCAN HOT RAILS YEAHHH WITH STRINGS TOO CLOSE TO THE PICKUP. I guess it just makes my guitar uber-versatile. It can sound fine clean, a little over driven, out of phase, and distorted. It's just...not really a Tele anymore...

Re: Number Girl
When I changed the pickups on my first Tele the middle position was out of phase at first. It sounds really weird and shrill; I didn't like it at all. The regular Tele middle position is magic, though. I suspect the out of phase thing works better on humbucker guitars.

When two pickups are out of phase, each pickup cancels out the identical sounds on the other pickup, resulting in whatever sound is left over. In phase pickups merely add sound on top of each other. Out of phase wiring produces a nasal sound that is lower in output (since you're subtracting sounds rather than adding sounds). Phase switching is the ability to put the pickups on your guitar in and out of phase at will.
Is it practical? Sure - it's more like adding a whammy bar to your guitar. It's not necessary; it's just another tool in your arsenal.

That's just plain untrue...

Yea, and thats why I deleted it.
I had read that you could only do it on Humbucker pickups, but I went and looked it up after I posted it and I was wrong.

Re: Number Girl
I hate to break this conversation up, but this thread's tenure on this forum is almost a year past my own, and all my old NG stuff went away with my old computer. So I was curious... Was there a link in here somewhere for music? Reading this thread makes me want to listen to NG again. Thanks
