the pillows
Snowkel
Number Girl
TMGE

A mix of Japanese alt. rock, ska, jazz and hip-hop. Plus some original reggae, folk rock and alt. rock.

Interesting thread.

More or less in the correct order:

the pillows
Barenaked Ladies
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant
Pavement
Apples in Stereo
David Bazan/Pedro the Lion
Nujabes
Queen
Squirrel Nut Zippers
Daft Punk

Runners-up include: Guitar Wolf, Toro y Moi, Super Butter Dog and Sparta Locals.
A few years ago, AKFG and Sambomaster would have made it onto this list easy, but recently I find I just can't listen to them anymore.

Points for having TMGE in your list 8) . Barenaked Ladies are always great, in the kitchen, on the sofa, in bed...
Haha, and the award for most orginal list goes to... Lesser_Hamster.
Apples in Stereo, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Super Butter Dog, Pedro the Lion.... really? hahaha.
Sounds great, never heard of them before, I'll defintely check some out.
Which do you recommend? (Currently in the mood for cheerful sound, energetic or laid-back either or both.)

edit: I think I'll try some Barenaked Ladies..hmmm.

Lol. If you're looking for cheerful stuff, then go for Apples in Stereo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmkZ4XynrO4

Barenaked Ladies were my favorite band for years, until I discovered the pillows. These days I don't listen to them very much. One of the founding members left in 2009, and their new stuff just doesn't do it for me. Still, they've got more than a decade of albums that are well worth listening to. They're very taented musicians and put on a great live show as well. Some of my favorites:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bal6qLpe-Wc

Pedro the Lion was David Bazan's first band. It's identified by many as Christian alt-rock. I'm an avowed atheist, bordering on antitheist, but I love his songs. He's among the most talented songwriters living today, and many of the songs he wrote as Pedro the Lion are moving. They're never overtly religious, and his earlier concept albums are really worth looking into. Check it out-- you won't regret it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xt6KIfrDy0A
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxavL9Ss ... re=related
Also, his version of "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" is my favorite Christmas song ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13umQPL3ODE

If you want fun, upbeat stuff, Squirrel Nut Zippers may also be worth looking into. They're a ragtime-style band, and their earlier albums are god-tier. Check these out:

Let me know what you think!

Echoing the Barenaked Ladies recommendation. They don't get taken seriously in the US because people just think "Oh, One Week and Pinch Me. And It's All Been Done?" But they're regarded as a national treasurer here in Canada because they're actually a fucking good band. Pick up Stunt and Maroon. Both hugely great albums. and Steven Page has such a distinct, lovable voice.

Oh those Zippers!
'The Suits Are Picking On The Bill' is lovely!
Got me swinging like a made man.
Repeat!

I like the versatility of your list btw.

edit: wow nice band man. Haven't come across a song (yet) that I didn't like.

Word. When he left the band, I couldn't believe it. The other members are fantastic musicians, but without him, I definitely feel as though they lost some of their oomph. And yeah, in the US they're kind of seen as a novelty band. It's a shame. Stunt and Maroon are fantastic albums, and everything that came before them is also, IMO, awesome.

Lol, I'm glad you like it. I discovered these guys when I was a kid and haven't stopped listening to them since. Their first three albums or so (and their Christmas album) are some of my all-time favorites. They were a little popular in the late 90's and early 2000's, during the brief Swing revival. After that they faded into obscurity and broke up. They've since regrouped and released a live album, but it's hard to say whether they'll put out any new material in the future.

I was eating at Chipotle the other day and was delighted to hear "Suits are Picking Up the Bill" playing overhead.
