Questions.

What do you plan to do with your guitar? I mean, what sort of music are you interested in playing? Do you want to be a lead guitarist or more of a songwriter who plays rythym? Besides the pillows, are there any other guitar tones you like?

kelp, why are you recommending against a Mustang? I really like mine.

as of recent, i got into Hoover's Ooover and i really like their sound. perhaps something similar. and it sounds simple. i'm into punk, as is my friend so we might do something like that. but give it our own sound. it doesn't matter if i am lead or rthyme.

and i think kelp is against the mustang as my choice cuz then its just another manabe clone. it would be better to go vintage pillows with the thinline...

I'm pretty sure Manabe only uses Mustangs because he likes the feel and look of them. I do too. Manabe can fucking match any sound he wants with his badass stacks and shit load of pedals. Notice how he first got his signature sound when he played strats? Yeah.

I love my Mustang too, Jomei. I just think there are better guitars you can get with a thousand dollar budget.
watch the Bokura no Hare suisei video. he is playing a white one.
The PV? That's his Mustang.

A Jazzmaster would be super-sexy, but they're on the pricey end, if I remember correctly.

It sounds like you definitely wanna go for the single-coil sound, though.

Edit: Strats and Mustangs have markedly different tones. He's not using a Mustang simply for feel, in my opinion, because Strats feel just as good, if only a little heavier.

I do agree, though, with a thousand dollars you could get better.

Now that I watched the Bokura no Hale Suisei PV agan, I see what you mean. It looks kinda like Sawao's Hybrid Rainbow era vintage white thinline. I don't think you'll be a clone of him if you own a guitar which he used in a few live performances back in 1992.

Oh, and Ciid, I said I didn't remember Yoshiaki playing a thinline. Not remembering isn't shanking material.

I'm talking about the Mustang's thin, shortscale neck. Your statement about how Strats and Mustangs sound different is exactly my point. Manabe can get his sound out of many different instruments, so he might as well pick one that he likes the physical features of.

EDIT: lol duble post

My point is that maybe he likes the Mustang tone, too. I do. :o

Although, I like Happy Bivouac's sound better, and he was using a strat then... but I think that was due to his rig, not the Strat.

Where am I going with this? I don't have any idea. Mustangs are good, so are strats, so are teles. Get whatever you want, man. Try stuff out and go with whatever you think will make you happiest. That's the main thing, isn't it?

Masami (rhythm) plays a Jazzmaster, and Kenta (lead) plays a Telecaster, IIRC.

I personally adore Jazzmasters. :O

I never said he used his Mustang exclusively.

Trust me, Jomei. I have the album sitting two feet from me.

Manabe uses Bob, Teles, Strats, and Mustangs when recording you dumb fools.

What Manabe is playing in the Bokura Hare no Suisei PV in the old stock footage is a yellow ESP Telecaster Thinline knockoff. Much like the one Sawao played extensively from 1994 or 1995 (IIRC) to 2000. Sawao then moved directly to Fender Cyclones. Manabe's Tele Thinline was his main gigging amp until Kool Spice, when he moved onto Gibsons, and then to ESP Strats.

Oh, I trust you. Do you have any idea which songs he uses the Mustang for on Bivouac? Also, if he recorded with the Mustang, wouldn't that suggest that he likes it for more than just looks and feel, and that he prefers its tone in some cases?

And why would he just ditch his sweet sweet strat altogether? He probably still has it. Guitars don't just dissapear when a guitarist switches to a new one.
