haha Yeah, I don't play much solidbody rock style guitar anymore. Although Guthrie Govan's CD is fucking the best shit ever.

thanks sclone, these sort of exercises are exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. My pinky cries from pain due to the wretched nature of my acoustic, but it's a good pain.

i'll take a picture of what i mean if this isn't clear but i've got this problem with my pinky...
for the last year or so i've tried to get my pinky to do what i want it to, but no matter how hard i try, when i put my ring finger down, my pinky pulls back into my palm (like i was making a fist, i guess). so the problem is that it pulls my pinky away from the fretboard and it's not as available to hit a note as i would like.
i've tried playing very slow and holding my pinky just above the string and putting down my ring finger, but after a short while my pinky retailiates and starts hurting... also tried playing with the guitar higher or lower on my body and no dice.
is my left hand just broken?
anywho, yeah i've fallen out of the habit of doing pentatonic practice and chromatic (especially permuted, you know... 1324 4231 and so on) practice... and i don't think i ever did hammer practice.. i'll post something new after a week or two of practice or something.

i worked my pinky way too much, too fast, and now it looks like there's a golf ball embedded in the side of my fretting hand. half muscle/half painful swelling.
mostly doing this as an exercise:

that 2-5-7 stretch that starts it is a real bitch.

Have you had an injury in the past that might have injured your hand?
One factor that can ruin your playing is stress. Any amount of stress or tension is horrible for you. I would suggest before you play soak your hand in some hot water and massage to relieve any amount of tension. Then take something like this.
e ---3h4h5h6p5h6p5h6
and slowly make you pinky HO and PO over and over again, while holding down all the previous notes.
I used to do that to build strength in my pinky.

Hell Yes! I remember watching his Tone Merchants seminar videos
almost a year ago. So good.

Push a fretted string up or down along the fret, while keeping the note fretted, which should increase the tension and cause the pitch to rise.

Dude, Sclone, have you heard his new CD? Shit is so fucking good. In every possible way. There is not one single bad thing about it, and I hate most everything. I can't talk this album up enough.

this paul gilbert lick is an amazing way to practice your HO's and PO's, and strengthen your pinky
E|-5---------------5-7-5h7p5---5-8-7h8p7p5----- B|---8p7p5---5h7h8-----------8-------------8--- G|---------7-----------------------------------
it's also pretty helpful for your picking, because once you've got that idea down, you tackle this*:
E|-9--------------------9-12-9h12p9----9-14-12h14p12p9----| B|--------------------------------------------------------| G|---14p11p9----9h11h14-------------14-----------------14-| D|--------------------------------------------------------| A|-----------12-------------------------------------------| E|--------------------------------------------------------|
youtube paul gilbert string skips and you'll see why this is so amazing.
*playing this at full speed is not humanly possible

You can buy it from cornford records, or abstractlogix.com, or I can hook you up with it.
