Along with what bleuster said, he is a solo artist, and now he is
touring with Steve Vai. I'm sure you saw him play on the G3 video.
Or if you haven't, you should.

You guys can argue all you want, but we all know that Les Claypool is the greatest thing to ever happen to bass. Then it'd have to be Jaco. Wooten is pretty good... but he's a freakin drugless hippie. As for Flea, most talented person in that band, but still way over rated.

Paul McCartney is great in my opnion.
No amazing tech skills, but for a pop bassist, he's ace.
I remember he fuzz bass playing in "Think for Yourself" off of 'Rubber Soul'
very cool.

He was boss on Helter Skelter and Come Together, too.
For someone who can't read music he can handle pretty much any instrument you hand him.

Wow. It doesn't really have much to do with Jun - Sawao is the one writing the bass lines anyway. When he plays old songs, he handles them just fine though. I still like the basslines of Tatsuya's time the best though. I loved seeing him play the upright bass while they did Tonight live.

Man.
Take it from me when I say Jun Suzuki's shit is really weak. I admit to Happy Bivouac being hell of catchy, but otherwise he only has a decently impressive song here and there. A good 80% of everything Tatsuya Kashima did was simply amazing and nothing less than what I'd expect from a bassist such as himself. Kenji Ueda came in fresh from a friggin' punk band (Kenzi & The Trips) and immediately adapted to the many different genres the pillows sampled in their early career. He recorded some of the catchiest stuff on any of their albums.
Lately I've been finding myself fellating Shinya Abiko of Going Steady/Ging Nang Boyz. Download and listen to some of the songs he recorded with Going Steady. Specifically gems like Tokyo Shonen, Hoshi ni Negai wo, Doutei SO YAANGU, Kakenukete Seishun, Universal, and My Soulful Heart Beat Makes Me Sing My Soul Music. Don't even get me started on how he plays these incredibly catchy riffs while backing the vocalist in just about every single song. Any bassist that ends up taking the audience's attention away from the guitarist is awesome, simply awesome. He's one of these such bassists.
Other bassists I admire are Tsuyoshi Kawakami (Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Tsuyoshi Kawakami & His Moodmakers), Hinata Hidekazu (Ex-Art-School, Zazen Boys, Straightener), Kameda Sezi (Tokyo Jihen), Miura Kentarou (Bazra), Yoshito Hirai (Ex-Potshot, Ex-Young Punch, Yield, PENPALS), Haruyuki Ooki (Ex-O.P. King, The Pees, Yo-King), Hikeki Tanaka (YKZ), Okamine Kohshu (The Back Horn), Katsuya Ichikawa (Potshot), Akiko Hamada (GO!GO!7188), and just about every big name listed already.
Sawao is the one writing the bass lines anyway.
That's a big claim to make.

What about Takahiro Yamada from AKG? He has some pretty catchy stuff as well. Kona Yuki is awesome, N.G.S. is catchy, Jihei Tansaku is great as well as Shindokaku, Re:Re:, Sunday, and so on.

The bass makes most of the AKG songs. Yamada also sings in a few songs as well (and not just background singing). No matter what you say, AKG is popular so they must be doing something right.

I like the bass in their songs, but don't go suggesting that a band is good just because it's popular.
