You just look like an emo kid when you don't use exclamation points.

Monochrome Lovers = win. Seriously, listen to Kashima play those bass lines. Listen to Manabe's guitar. Those in themselves are automatic wins.

Kool Spice > Moon Gold, IMHO. Moon Gold has a crappy Sawao singing. Kool Spice is where it starts to turn around for the better.

No. I stand by my opinion on it. Monochrome Lovers is perhaps my least favourite pillows song.

I don't like most of Moon Gold either!
You're telling me you like My Beautiful Sun (Irene) more than fucking Kool Spice and Moongold?
I really like My beautiful Sun (Irene) from the TMTL album. But compare the song to Kool Spice's Naked Shuffle and MOON GOLD'S DEAR, MY 'FIRST' STEP. There's no way that My Beautiful Sun (Irene) can beat these awsome songs. Btw is that the song you really hate by the pillows. I can't blame you. But it is kinda catchy.

Listen to an Yngvie Malmsteen song. Sick guitar. Sick drums. FUCKING BORING. (no offense, Steve, just my take) I think the most important thing a song must have it's the way it's written. And Monochrome Lovers fails to impress.

But, I digress, as far as Kool Spice is concerned, Sha-la-la-la is my least favourite. And I had forgot the album had Toy Dolls, which is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Yeah. Which is weird, because Pantomime is actually decent compared to Moon Gold. I seriously wish they would remake Kimi Ga Iru like they did Boku Wa Kakera so it would sound... more pillowsy I guess.

Personally, I don't think there's anything special about the different layers of Monocrhome Lovers, but it's the song that does impress me.

Sawao fucking gets the job done with something as retarded as "la la la la lla"

Well, this is kind of hard. I'm limiting myself to five choices max per category, just because there's so many songs I like.

Guitar:

1. Pearl Jam - Alive
Even though the song doesn't really have an ending and instead just goes off into a two-minute guitar solo, I really like it all the same.
2. The Pillows - Happy Bivouac
C'mon, who can resist that signature riff?
3. Bush - Machinehead
Yep. Maybe not too inventive, but kinda catchy.
4. The Eagles - Hotel California
What can I say about this? It's a classic, the intro is instantly recognizable, and the solo at the end is great. Same deal as "Alive," though - lacks a proper ending.
5. The Pillows - Carnival
Whenever I have a guitar in my hands, I can't resist playing the intro. It's one of the most identifiable ditties I've ever heard.

Bass:
1. The Eels - Mr. E's Beautiful Blues
The bassline dominates the first half of his song, and makes it all bouncy and awesome.
2. I'll just put Tatsuya Kashima here, because I can't think of a specific song offhand. I know he's fucking awesome, but the bass isn't prominent enough in the mix for me to notice it unless I'm listening for it.

Keyboard/Organ/That kind of thing:

1. Grandaddy - A.M. 180
Because. Just...just because.
2. David Holmes - 69 Police
I catch myself humming it all the freaking time.
3. Caesars - Jerk it Out
Catchy song. Gotta love it. Don't care if it was in an iTunes commercial.
4. Gorillaz - 19-2000
I actually love everything about this song, but I'm just sticking it here.

Vocals:

1. The Breeders - Off You
Female vocals are always great, and there's something about the sultry, mumbling quality in this song that I just really like.
2. Grandaddy - The Crystal Lake
Grandaddy's singer has an awesome voice, and hearing him croon "I gotta get out of here" during the chorus is just great.
3. Nirvana - All Apologies
As in Jomei's list, there's a lot of Nirvana songs that could be put here. Cobain maybe wasn't the best singer, but he made it work very well. I prefer the Unplugged in New York versions of most of Nirvana's songs, myself.
4. Jets to Brazil - Sweet Avenue
Really, I like Blake Schwartzenbach's voice all around, but after he tore it up with Jawbreaker his work in Jets to Brazil gains a scratchy, gravelly quality I like. And I just love this song.
5. John Lee Hooker - Boom Boom
I always liked the singing of some blues musicians, and especially John Lee Hooker.

Also, honorable mention to Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel. His projection has always impressed me. And Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots. He has an admirably strong baritone voice that I wish I had.

Albums:

1. Green Day - Insomniac
This is one of those records I can listen to all the way through without skipping a single song. It's not often I find one of those.
2. Fountains of Wayne - Self-Titled and Utopia Parkway
Both great stuff. I listen to them when I want some feel-good music.
3. The Pillows - Thank You, My Twilight
My favorite Pillows album, almost tied with Happy Bivouac.
4. The Beatles - Revolver
Yep.
5. PENPALS - Self-Titled and Americaman
Easily their two best albums, in my opinion. The self-titled is another of those records where I can listen straight through without skipping any songs, while Americman makes up for the one or two I skip over with some really awesome others.

My band used to do this song, and I always found it fun to play.

Damn, I totally left that out.

guitar:

don chaffer - I can't name one song. Maybe "confessions of a broken down man." but everything he does is perfect.
Manabe- Thank you, my twilight's solo is one of my favorites.
neutral milk hotel.

bass:

kashima and kenji ueda.
kenny carter - amazing bassist from the band waterdeep and trump dawgs.
jay pfeifer - earlier bassist for waterdeep, preferred the fretless bass and the upright. one of my bass heroes.
jaco pastorius

piano:

Luke Sullivant - pianist for waterdeep.
lori chaffer - other pianist for waterdeep.
whoever played piano on the cymbals "love you" album.
belle & sebastian

drums:
shinichiro sato
brandon graves: drummer for waterdeep, peppershaker, urban john, the gentlemen adventurers, and various other outfits.

vocals:
don chaffer, lori chaffer, belle & sebastian, lily chou-chou, jeff mangum.

As you can see, I like the band waterdeep. talented bunch, they were. I should sig something...

manabe also sings that part, making a great harmony. despite manabe's great voice, he only does harmony parts. which, by the way, i've noticed more and more of as i listen. also, when listening to fool on the planet, since i have the actual cd, his parts were more clear.

this really gets me:

wtf? pantomime is great. moon gold is too. how could you say such things?

also:
I seriously wish they would remake Kimi Ga Iru like they did Boku Wa Kakera so it would sound... more pillowsy I guess
i think the best thing about the pillows is not that they have one clearly defined sound that ALL of their songs have, but the fact that they have so many different styles of music over the course of their career. unlike some bands i've heard, the pillows' songs all sound different, because they ARE different. i can respect you liking their new stuff better, but how can you say that the old stuff sounds less "pillowsy"? moon gold and kool spice stand out well BECAUSE of the fact that they tried out different styles of music.

Apologist.

And you're taking things out of context. I was referring to the way they were recorded. For the record, Moon Gold sounds creamy and crappy. Pantomime sounds, I dunno, pillowsy.

THE WAY IT SOUNDS.

Christ. Listen to Kimi Ga Iru. Go on, I can wait. Now listen to something off Please, Mr. Lostman. Anything. Notice the big difference in the way it sounds? Notice how most of the pillows' stuff doesn't sound at all like anything on Moon Gold? THERE YOU HAVE IT.
