"]I hate to say it, but I've never heard any songs by them.

What's the best album for beginners?
Give Num-Heavymetallic a shot. I think more people say School Girl Bye Bye is their most accessible album, but I found Num-Heavymetallic to be...well, memorable and awesome.
But get your hands on an mp3 of Omoide In My Head. pronto.

and as for AWPJudy.
Yeah, it's going to seem sacreligious to actually accept his viewpoint (gasp!), but I can see where he's coming from.
I when I first heard Number Girl some time last year...I downloaded School Girl Bye Bye (I think)...listened to it for a minute or two, then trashed it. Too loud, too crashy, weird vocals, just not my thing.
Then everyone was hyping NG the beginning of this year sometime...spring? Not sure. But then Jedi gave me School Girl Bye Bye a second time.
Oh it's definitely something I made a tough attempt to get into. Saying "well...There's something interesting here. A lot of Japanese rock enthusiasts like them. Let's give it a shot. Really give it a shot."
Then I warmed up to it, and was of course captivated by Omoide in My Head.
I wouldn't say Number Girl is one of my favorite bands, no way. Not even if you gave me 30 spots to pick my favorites.
Personally, I absolutely love 90% of Num-Heavymetallic. School Girl Bye Bye is sometimes enjoyable. It's listenable, but I don't find much I like there. School Girl Distortional Addict was just a bit too much for me. Too fuzzy, too unfocused, unclear, messy.
But some of Number Girl's standout tracks are enough to make me make conscious efforts to keep listening to them, seeing if I might pick something up. I'm not going to force myself to like them, but I'm definitely giving them a much larger chance than other bands whos music is somewhat questionable.
And Num-Ami-Dabutz isn't noise. Tabuchi's solo freakouts are noisy yes, but it's not shit. It's brutal and loud, and just feels good. I'm not saying just anyone can fuck around on a guitar and rape the whammy bar and sound good. There's something about Tabuchi that makes me really...resonate with that type of noise. But yeah, sometimes Number Girl is only enjoyable under a certain mindset or situation. I don't have NG playing in the background often. It's music I need to focus on to enjoy, and that's fine. It's like sort of like Aphex Twin's more violent and weird tracks. You just have to bee in the right mood - and when you are, everything's 10 times cooler.
Judy, I'll send you Tombo the Electric Bloodred. You may like it.
